Remy and the Dream Lantern

A story for: Remy, Age 5

Created September 01, 2026

Once upon a time, in a cozy little burrow nestled under the biggest oak tree, lived a brave bunny named Remy. Remy wasn't brave in the way of fighting big scary animals, oh no. Remy was brave in a very special way. Remy was brave enough to guard the Dream Lantern.

The Dream Lantern wasn't like any other lantern you've ever seen. It didn't glow with fire, but with soft, shimmery moonbeams. And when its light touched the world, it filled everyone's minds with the sweetest, most wonderful dreams. It made sure little squirrels dreamed of endless acorns, and sleepy birds dreamed of warm nests on sunny branches.

Every evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in sleepy shades of orange and purple, Remy would carefully polish the Dream Lantern. Its light would begin to flicker softly, like a friendly wink, getting ready for its important job. Remy would hop to the highest point of the burrow, a small, comfy lookout, and gently hold the lantern up high.

He watched as the moonbeams from the lantern stretched across the meadow, touching each sleeping creature. He saw little field mice snuggling deeper into their beds as happy dream-sparkles drifted their way. He saw baby owls tucking their heads under their wings, ready for adventures in dreamland.

One night, a tiny cloud floated by, a little bit grumpy and dark. It tried to block the Dream Lantern's light, making the meadow a little bit dim. But Remy, with his brave heart, didn't let it. He puffed out his chest, just a tiny bit, and held the lantern even steadier, even higher. The cloud, seeing Remy's determination and the lantern's unwavering glow, slowly drifted away, letting the soft light shine through once more.

Remy smiled, a quiet, happy smile. He knew he had done his job well. All the little creatures were safe in their slumber, dreaming their happy dreams.

As the night grew deeper and the stars twinkled like scattered diamonds, Remy felt a gentle tiredness spread through his fluffy body. The Dream Lantern, having spread its magic far and wide, began to dim, its glow becoming a soft, sleepy murmur. Remy carefully placed it back in its special alcove, where it would rest until morning.

He snuggled into his own warm bed of soft moss, his little nose twitching with contentment. The last whispers of the Dream Lantern's magic filled his burrow, promising him the sweetest dreams of carrots and sunny fields. Remy closed his eyes, a soft sigh escaping him, and drifted off to sleep, feeling safe and sound, knowing that tomorrow, the Dream Lantern would shine again.
