A story for: Zoe, Age 6
Created July 21, 2026
Zoe snuggled deeper into her cozy bed, the soft blanket feeling like a warm hug. Outside her window, the moon glowed like a friendly nightlight, casting silvery shadows across her room. Tonight, Zoe was thinking about her special friend, a gentle giant named Willow.
Willow wasn't like the giants in storybooks who stomped and roared. Oh no, Willow was made of the softest, greenest leaves, and her skin shimmered with dew. She was so tall that her head brushed against the clouds, and her arms, as wide as a row of apple trees, were always ready for a gentle sway. Willow lived in the Whispering Woods, just beyond Zoe’s garden, and Zoe was the only one who could see her.
Every evening, as the stars began to twinkle, Zoe would look out her window. She’d imagine Willow, standing tall and peaceful, her long, leafy hair rustling softly in the breeze. Tonight, Zoe imagined Willow was wearing a crown of fireflies, each tiny light winking like a sleepy eye.
Willow didn't speak with a booming voice. Instead, she whispered secrets through the leaves of the trees. Tonight, Zoe imagined Willow whispering a lullaby, a soft, rustling melody that sounded like a gentle rain on the roof. It spoke of sleepy bunnies nestled in their burrows, of little fish dreaming in the quiet pond, and of baby birds tucked safely in their nests.
Zoe closed her eyes, picturing Willow's kind, leafy face. She imagined Willow's enormous, gentle hand reaching down, not to pick her up, but to gently smooth the air above her, sending a wave of calming warmth. Willow’s presence felt like the safest, most comforting hug in the whole wide world.
As the whispering lullaby filled Zoe’s mind, she felt herself floating. She wasn't really floating, of course, but it felt like her worries were drifting away, carried by Willow’s gentle breath. She imagined herself tucked into a soft, mossy bed at the base of Willow’s trunk, protected and loved.
The firefly crown on Willow’s head began to dim, one by one, as the little lights grew sleepy too. The rustling lullaby became softer and softer, a gentle hum that lulled Zoe’s eyelids to droop. She took a deep breath, smelling the imaginary scent of fresh leaves and damp earth, a scent that always made her feel safe.
With one last, happy thought of her giant, leafy friend, Zoe drifted off to sleep. Her dreams were filled with green, shimmering leaves, firefly winks, and the most peaceful whispers imaginable.
