Ava's City of Dreams

A story for: Ava, Age 5

Created August 11, 2026

The city lights twinkled like a thousand tiny stars as Ava snuggled deeper into her warm, soft bed. Outside her window, the big buildings stood tall and quiet, like friendly giants watching over the sleeping world.

Ava loved her city. During the day, it was a busy, happy place, full of red buses humming like sleepy bees and people bustling along, their shoes making a gentle tap-tap-tap sound on the pavement. But at night, the city whispered lullabies.

She closed her eyes and imagined her own special city, just for bedtime. First, she saw the sleepy streetlights, blinking softly, like sleepy eyes closing one by one. They weren't bright and dazzling anymore; they were gentle, warm glows, making long, soft shadows dance on the quiet streets.

Next, Ava pictured the tall buildings. They weren't as busy as they were in the daytime. Now, they were like cozy towers, with little windows that held warm, golden squares of light. She imagined that inside each window, a little lamp was glowing, keeping everyone safe and sound, just like her own bedside lamp.

She heard the softest sounds of the city at night. The gentle sigh of a distant train, like a big, tired dragon settling down to sleep. The whisper of the wind through the leaves of the park trees, like a secret message from the night. And sometimes, a little hoot-hoot of a sleepy owl, high up in a tree, saying goodnight to the moon.

Ava imagined the bridges, usually so busy with cars, now completely still. They looked like long, graceful arms reaching out to hold hands across the quiet river. The river itself flowed so smoothly, like a ribbon of silver, reflecting the sleepy moon and stars.

She took a deep, gentle breath, feeling her blanket soft against her chin. The city was her friend, a big, cozy blanket that wrapped around her home, keeping her safe and warm all night long. The noises were fading now, becoming softer and softer, like a faraway song.

Ava felt her eyelids grow heavy, like little curtains slowly closing. The gentle hum of the city outside became a soft, steady rhythm, a comforting heartbeat. She pictured herself floating softly above her city of dreams, tucked into a little cloud, as the sleepy streetlights blinked, the tall buildings stood guard, and the quiet river flowed. With a final, peaceful sigh, Ava drifted off to sleep, snuggled deep in her bed, safe and sound in her dreaming city.
