Zoe's Cozy Room

A story for: Zoe, Age 4

Created September 20, 2026

Once upon a time, in a house filled with soft, happy sounds, lived a sweet little girl named Zoe. Tonight, Zoe was getting ready for bed. Her mommy had just tucked her in, pulling the warm, fluffy blanket right up to her chin.

Zoe’s room was her very favorite place. It was painted a gentle, sleepy blue, like the sky just before the stars pop out. On her wall, there were stickers of friendly, smiling clouds that looked like they were floating in a quiet dream. Zoe looked at them and imagined she was floating too, very, very slowly.

Her bedside lamp cast a soft, golden glow, making shadows dance like sleepy little puppies on the ceiling. Zoe loved watching the shadows. Sometimes they looked like a big, cuddly bear, and sometimes like a tiny little bird about to land on her nose. Tonight, the shadows were very still, almost as if they were already asleep.

Zoe snuggled deeper into her pillow. It was so soft, like a cloud made of feathers. She hugged her favorite teddy bear, Barnaby. Barnaby always had a comforting, squishy tummy, perfect for holding tight. He smelled faintly of lavender, because Mommy sometimes sprayed it on his fur to help Zoe feel calm.

She looked around her room one last time. Her little toy kitchen sat quietly in the corner, its pretend pots and pans waiting patiently for tomorrow's pretend breakfast. Her colorful building blocks were neatly stacked in a basket, dreaming of becoming tall towers and cozy houses. Everything in her room was peaceful and still.

Zoe closed her eyes for a moment. She listened to the quiet hum of the house. It was the sound of everyone sleeping soundly, or getting ready to. She heard the gentle tick-tock of the clock in the hall, counting down to morning. Each tick-tock was like a little lullaby.

She imagined her room was a big, warm hug, wrapping her up safely. The blue walls were gentle arms, the soft blanket was a cozy squeeze, and Barnaby was a sweet kiss goodnight. Zoe felt so safe and loved in her special room.

Her eyelids felt heavier and heavier. The golden light from her lamp seemed to dim a tiny bit, even though it was still on. The dancing shadows were now completely still. Zoe took a big, soft breath, and then another. Her little body felt warm and relaxed. Soon, her breathing became slow and even. Zoe was drifting, drifting, drifting into a wonderful, peaceful sleep, right there in her very own cozy room.
