Leo and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Leo, Age 5

Created September 18, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the whispering trees and the twinkling stars, lived a very special dragon named Leo. Leo wasn't like the big, fiery dragons you might see in exciting stories. Oh no, Leo was a gentle dragon, with scales the color of a soft lavender sunset and wings that shimmered like quiet moonlight. His favorite thing to do was to watch over the night, making sure everything was peaceful and calm.

One evening, as the last sliver of sun dipped below the horizon, Leo noticed something peculiar. The Moon, usually so bright and round and cheerful, looked a little droopy. Her light was a bit dim, and she seemed to be sighing a tiny, silvery sigh. Leo, with his kind heart, flew a little closer. "Hello, dear Moon," he whispered, his voice like a warm breeze. "Are you feeling alright tonight? You seem a little… sleepy."

The Moon blinked her big, soft eye. "Oh, Leo," she murmured, her voice sounding like a soft jingle of bells. "I am so, so sleepy. It's been such a long day, watching over everyone. I just wish I could drift off to sleep like the little children below."

Leo thought for a moment. He knew just what to do! He gently flew closer, his big, lavender tail wagging ever so slightly. "Don't you worry, Moon," he chirped. "I can help you fall asleep. I know the best lullabies."

He began to sing, a soft, low hum that sounded like crickets chirping and gentle waves lapping on a faraway shore. His voice was warm and comforting, and as he sang, he began to gently circle the Moon, his shimmering wings creating a soft, hypnotic rhythm. He breathed out tiny, warm puffs of air, not hot fire, but soft, glowing clouds that smelled faintly of chamomile and sweet dreams. These little clouds danced around the Moon, making her feel cozy and safe.

As Leo continued to sing his gentle lullaby, the Moon's light grew softer and softer. Her big, soft eye slowly began to close. The little stars around her seemed to twinkle even more gently, as if they, too, were helping her drift off. Leo sang about soft mossy beds, and quiet streams, and fluffy clouds to rest upon. He sang about happy dreams and peaceful slumber.

Soon, the Moon was completely asleep, a faint, contented smile on her face. Her light was a soft, silvery glow, just enough to guide the night creatures, but not too bright to disturb her rest. Leo, feeling happy and peaceful, settled onto a fluffy cloud nearby. He yawned a wide, sleepy yawn, his own eyes feeling heavy. Watching over the sleeping Moon had made him sleepy too.

He snuggled into the cloud, feeling the cool night air and the gentle hum of the sleeping world below. His lavender scales felt warm and cozy, and his wings folded gently around him like a soft blanket. Leo closed his eyes, a tiny, happy smile on his own dragon face. He drifted off to sleep, dreaming of quiet stars and the peaceful, slumbering Moon, knowing he had made the night a little more calm for everyone.
