Ruby's City Stars

A story for: Ruby, Age 4

Created September 29, 2026

Once upon a time, in a big, busy city, lived a little girl named Ruby. Ruby had soft, curly hair, and her eyes sparkled like the streetlights at night. Tonight, as the sun dipped down and painted the sky in shades of orange and purple, Ruby was getting ready for bed.

From her window, Ruby could see the city beginning its nighttime dance. The tall buildings, which had gleamed in the sun all day, now twinkled with hundreds of tiny lights. "Look, Mama!" she whispered, pointing. "The city is putting on its pajamas too!"

Mama smiled and tucked Ruby into her cozy bed. "Yes, sweetie. And just like you, the city needs its rest after a long day of playing and working."

Ruby snuggled under her warm blanket, listening to the soft hum of the city outside. She heard the distant, gentle whoosh of a car, like a lullaby. She imagined the big buses, now parked quietly, dreaming of carrying happy people to their homes.

She closed her eyes and pretended she was floating high above her city. She saw the little lights of the streets connecting like silver threads, and the apartment windows glowing like tiny, warm jewels. Each light was a story, a family snuggled together, just like her.

Ruby thought of the big park she played in today, now sleeping under the moon. The swings were still, waiting patiently for morning. The slides were quiet, dreaming of giggles and whooshes. Even the little birds who sang so loudly in the day were tucked away in their nests, dreaming birdy dreams.

She imagined the tall, tall buildings, like friendly giants, standing guard over the sleeping city. They weren't scary, oh no. They were like wise, old friends, watching over everyone as they slept. Their lights flickered softly, like sleepy blinks.

Ruby took a deep, sleepy breath. The air in her room smelled sweet and clean. She heard the gentle tick-tock of the clock on her bedside table, counting the moments until morning. But morning felt a long way off, and that was just right for sleeping.

She imagined her favorite toy, her fluffy teddy bear, snuggled up beside her. He was dreaming of honey and hugs, she decided. Ruby felt so safe, so warm, and so loved. The city outside was quiet now, a gentle, comforting murmur. Its lights seemed to dim just a little, like sleepy eyes closing one by one.

Ruby's own eyelids grew heavy. The last thing she heard was the soft, rhythmic sound of her own breath, and the very gentle, sleepy sigh of the city outside her window. She drifted off to sleep, dreaming of city stars and peaceful nights.
