Eli and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Eli, Age 6

Created July 07, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the whispering treetops and sparkling starlight, lived a very special dragon named Eli. Eli wasn't like the dragons in exciting stories; he was a gentle dragon with scales the color of a soft twilight sky and wings that shimmered like a calm, quiet lake. His favorite thing to do was watch over the world as it drifted off to sleep.

Every evening, as the sun dipped its sleepy head below the hills, Eli would unfurl his magnificent wings and glide softly through the air. He loved to see the little houses twinkling with sleepy lights and the cuddly animals snuggling into their cozy beds.

But tonight, something was different. As Eli floated near the moon, he noticed it looked… a little restless. The Moon, usually so round and peaceful, was jiggling ever so slightly, and its silver light seemed a tiny bit worried. Eli, with his kind heart, flew a little closer.

“Hello, dear Moon,” Eli whispered, his voice like a warm breeze. “Is everything alright? You seem a little jiggly tonight.”

The Moon sighed, a soft, silent sigh that made the clouds shift gently. “Oh, Eli,” it whispered back, its voice like the rustle of sleepy leaves. “I just can’t seem to settle down. I’ve been up all day, helping the sun shine brightly, and now it’s my turn to watch over the night, but I’m just so… wide awake!”

Eli understood. Sometimes, even the busiest dragons had trouble falling asleep. He thought for a moment, then a wonderful idea sparked in his gentle mind. “Don’t you worry, sleepy Moon,” Eli chirped. “I know just what to do.”

Eli began to sing. His song wasn’t loud or boisterous; it was a soft, humming tune, like a lullaby made of starlight and warm wishes. He flew in slow, graceful circles around the Moon, his wings making a gentle, rhythmic swoosh-swoosh sound. As he sang, Eli’s scales began to glow with a very soft, calming light, like tiny, sleepy fireflies.

The Moon listened to Eli’s song. It felt the warmth of his glow and the gentle rhythm of his flight. Slowly, slowly, the Moon stopped jiggling. Its light softened even more, becoming truly peaceful. It felt so safe and cozy, wrapped in Eli's gentle care.

Eli continued to sing, his lullaby weaving through the starry night. He saw the Moon’s round face grow softer, its silver eyes beginning to droop. Soon, the Moon was completely still, shining with a calm, steady light, truly asleep. It knew Eli would watch over the world while it rested.

Eli smiled, a warm, sleepy smile. His work was done. He had helped the Moon find its slumber. Now, as the soft, quiet night deepened, Eli, feeling peaceful and content, found a cozy cloud to rest upon. He tucked his head under his wing, feeling the gentle sway of the cloud beneath him. The last thing he heard was the soft, steady hum of the sleeping world, and then, Eli, too, drifted off into a sweet, peaceful sleep, ready for another day of watching over the dreaming world.
