A story for: Luna, Age 5
Created September 07, 2026
Far, far away, in the deepest, bluest parts of the ocean, lived a beautiful whale named Luna. Luna wasn't just any whale; she had the most wonderful, softest singing voice, like gentle waves lapping on the shore. Every evening, as the sun began to dip below the water's surface, painting the sky with colors of orange and pink, Luna knew it was time for her special job.
Her job was to sing the ocean to sleep. The little clownfish, who darted amongst the anemones, would start to yawn. The shy seahorses, who clung to the swaying seaweed, would begin to sway even slower. Even the busy little crabs, who usually scuttled sideways all day, would pause their important work.
Luna would take a deep, slow breath, her giant body shimmering with the last bits of daylight. Then, she would begin. Her song was like a whisper carried on the currents, a melody made of soft hums and long, drawn-out notes that floated through the water. It was a song about how the stars were starting to twinkle high above, like tiny diamonds sprinkled on a dark blanket. It was a song about how the moon, a big, round pearl, was gently rising to watch over everyone.
She sang about the comfort of being tucked into a cozy seaweed bed, and the sweetness of dreaming of sunny coral gardens. Her voice wrapped around all the ocean creatures, big and small, like a warm, soft hug. The shimmering jellyfish would pulsate with a sleepy rhythm, and the schools of silver fish would slow their dance, gathering closer together for the night.
As Luna sang, the ocean grew quieter and quieter. The busy-day sounds faded, replaced by the peaceful silence of the deep. Even the big, rumbling waves on the surface seemed to listen, becoming softer, gentler, like a lullaby for the shore.
When the last, long note of her song faded into the twilight blue, the entire ocean was asleep. Every creature was nestled safely in their chosen sleeping spot, dreaming happy, bubbly dreams. Luna watched them for a moment, a peaceful smile on her gentle face. She had done her job wonderfully.
Then, feeling tired herself from her beautiful singing, Luna found her own favorite sleeping spot. It was a quiet, deep part of the ocean, where the water was especially still and calm. She drifted slowly, her enormous body swaying ever so slightly with the sleepy currents. With a final, content sigh, Luna closed her big, kind eyes, and joined the rest of the ocean in a long, peaceful sleep, ready to wake up and sing again tomorrow night.
