Eli and the Dream Lantern

A story for: Eli, Age 6

Created September 16, 2026

In a cozy burrow, snuggled deep beneath a big oak tree, lived a little bunny named Eli. Eli had soft, white fur and the wiggliest nose you ever did see. But Eli wasn't just any bunny; Eli was a very brave bunny, especially when it came to helping his friends.

Every night, as the sun dipped down and painted the sky in oranges and purples, Eli would get ready for his most important job. Not far from his burrow, in a secret hollow, sat a very special lantern. It wasn't just any lantern; it was the Dream Lantern. Its light was soft and warm, like a gentle hug, and it made sure all the good dreams found their way to the sleeping creatures of the forest.

One evening, a little owl, who was usually very wise, looked worried. "Eli," hooted the owl softly, "the Dream Lantern's light seems a bit dim tonight. Some of the little field mice are having trouble finding their happy dreams."

Eli's ears perked up. A dim Dream Lantern? That wouldn't do at all! He knew exactly what to do. He scampered to a patch of moon-petal flowers, which glowed with a gentle, silvery light. Carefully, Eli gathered a few of the brightest petals in his paws.

He hopped over to the Dream Lantern, his little heart feeling brave and kind. The lantern's glass was a little dusty, and that's why its light was not as bright. Eli gently polished the glass with a moon-petal, and as he did, the petal's light seeped into the lantern, making it glow with renewed warmth. He placed the rest of the moon-petals around the base of the lantern, like tiny, twinkling stars.

As the lantern grew brighter, a wonderful thing happened. The light stretched out, reaching over the sleepy forest, like a warm blanket. Eli watched as the light touched the burrows of the field mice, the nests of the little birds, and even the cozy den of a sleepy fox. He imagined the happy dreams floating on the lantern's glow, finding their way to everyone who was resting.

Eli felt a wave of sleepy contentment. His job was done. He had made sure everyone would have sweet, peaceful dreams. He yawned a big, bunny yawn, his eyes growing heavy. The Dream Lantern's light felt so comforting, so soft and peaceful. He snuggled down in his burrow, thinking of the warm glow spreading through the night.

As the last image of the bright, shining Dream Lantern faded in his mind, Eli closed his eyes. The soft, gentle light seemed to hum a lullaby just for him, and soon, Eli, the brave bunny who guarded the dreams, drifted off into his own happy, peaceful slumber.
