Sage's City Lullaby

A story for: Sage, Age 5

Created October 04, 2026

Once upon a time, in a city where tall buildings touched the stars and tiny cars zoomed like busy beetles, lived a little girl named Sage. Sage loved her city. She loved the bright, twinkling lights that popped on every evening, making the whole city sparkle like a giant jewelry box.

Tonight, as the sun dipped down, painting the sky in sleepy shades of orange and pink, Sage was snuggled in her cozy bed. She watched from her window as the first streetlights flickered to life, like little yawns across the streets.

“Goodnight, busy cars,” Sage whispered softly, as she saw their headlights glow gently in the distance. “Time for you to rest too.” The cars seemed to slow their rumble, their sounds growing softer and softer, like a faraway song.

Then, the big, tall buildings that stretched towards the moon began to dim their office lights, one by one. It was as if they were closing their eyes, ready for a long, peaceful sleep. Sage imagined the windows were little squares of golden light, slowly winking out.

“Goodnight, tall buildings,” she murmured, her voice warm and sleepy. “Dream sweet dreams of the clouds.”

Out on the sidewalk, the last few people were walking home. Sage saw them, tiny figures like dolls, moving slowly, their footsteps quiet. They seemed to be floating home, ready for their own beds and soft blankets.

“Goodnight, busy people,” Sage whispered, her eyelids feeling heavier now. “Rest your happy feet.”

Even the big, bright signs that usually flashed with lots of colors started to settle down. Some turned off completely, leaving just a soft, steady glow. Others changed their colors more slowly, like a gentle rainbow swaying in the dark.

“Goodnight, sparkling signs,” Sage yawned, a tiny, sweet sound. “See you in the morning.”

Sage pulled her fluffy blanket up to her chin. The city outside her window, once so full of cheerful noise and bright lights, was now humming a quiet lullaby. It was a gentle, soft hum, like a big, kind bear settling down to sleep. The distant sounds of the city were no longer loud, but soothing, like a soft whisper on the wind.

She closed her eyes, imagining the whole city was tucked into bed, just like her. The cars were dreaming of smooth roads, the buildings were dreaming of sunny skies, and the people were dreaming of happy smiles. Sage took a deep, peaceful breath. The city was sleeping, and so was she. Drifting, drifting, into the softest, warmest dreams.
