Nora's City Lullaby

A story for: Nora, Age 6

Created August 28, 2026

Nora snuggled deep into her soft, warm bed. Outside her window, the city was beginning to hum its goodnight song. It wasn't a loud song, but a soft, gentle melody of twinkling lights and distant sounds.

She looked out at the tall buildings, like sleepy giants standing guard. Each window glowed with a tiny light, like a little star saying goodnight. Nora imagined the people inside, just like her, getting ready for sleep. Maybe a little girl was reading a book about a friendly dragon, or a little boy was tucking in his favorite teddy bear.

The streetlights below cast long, soft shadows, like friendly monsters stretching out their arms to hug the sidewalk. The cars, which had bustled and rushed all day, now moved slowly, their headlights like sleepy eyes blinking goodnight.

Nora remembered her day. She had seen a big, red bus that looked like a giant ladybug. She had waved to a friendly dog walking its owner in the park. She had even heard the cheerful sound of an ice cream truck, playing its happy tune as it drove away.

Now, the city’s sounds were different. The far-off rumble of a train sounded like a lullaby drum, a gentle rhythm rocking the night. The faint chirping of crickets in the little park across the street was like tiny musicians playing a soft, sleepy tune.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She could still feel the warmth of her mom’s goodnight hug. She imagined the moon, a big, round cookie in the sky, watching over everyone in the city, making sure they had sweet dreams.

Nora thought about her own dreams. Maybe she would fly on the back of a friendly pigeon, soaring above the city lights. Or perhaps she would explore a secret garden hidden in the heart of a tall skyscraper. Whatever her dreams were, she knew they would be warm and wonderful.

The sounds of the city grew softer and softer. The distant train became a whisper. The crickets’ song faded into the quiet night. Nora’s eyelids felt heavy, like two little clouds drifting gently down. She felt so safe and cozy in her bed, surrounded by the peaceful city. With a soft sigh, Nora drifted off to sleep, tucked in by the gentle hum of her city home.
