Cleo's City Lullaby

A story for: Cleo, Age 4

Created October 19, 2026

Cleo was a little girl with big, curious eyes who lived in a city that sparkled like a jewel box at night. Every evening, as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Cleo would snuggle into her soft bed. Tonight, she held her favorite teddy bear, Mr. Snuggles, close.

“Look, Mr. Snuggles,” Cleo whispered, pointing out her window. Tiny lights began to twinkle all over the city. They looked like little fireflies dancing on the buildings. The streetlights flickered on, one by one, making the sidewalks glow. It was like magic!

Cleo loved the sounds of the city at bedtime. They weren't loud or scary, but soft and faraway, like a lullaby just for her. She could hear the gentle hum of cars driving by, a soft, steady sound that made her feel safe. Sometimes, she’d hear a distant ambulance siren, but it always faded quickly, like a little sleepy bee flying home.

Tonight, Cleo imagined what the city did when she went to sleep. Did the big, tall buildings close their eyes too? Did the streetlights whisper goodnight to each other? She giggled softly at the thought. Maybe the little hot dog stand down the street snored softly, dreaming of mustard and ketchup.

She watched a tiny airplane blink its red and green lights high in the sky, looking like a sleepy star slowly moving across the dark blue blanket. It was on its way home, just like Cleo was in her cozy bed. She imagined the pilot was humming a sleepy tune, getting ready for a good night’s rest.

Cleo’s mommy came in and tucked her blanket all around her, soft and warm. “Time for sleepy thoughts, my sweet Cleo,” Mommy whispered, kissing her forehead. “The city is getting ready for its own quiet time.”

Cleo closed her eyes. She imagined the big clock tower in the center of the city chiming a very soft, sleepy ‘ding-dong, ding-dong,’ telling everyone it was time to dream. The little leaves on the park trees would rustle gently, like they were sighing a happy goodnight.

She could still hear the faraway hum of the city, now even softer, like a very quiet song. It was a comforting sound, like a big, friendly hug from her wonderful city. Cleo snuggled deeper into her pillow, Mr. Snuggles still held tight. Her breathing became slow and steady. The city's lullaby lulled her gently to sleep, ready for new adventures when the sun woke up again.
