A story for: Sage, Age 3
Created August 29, 2026
Once upon a time, high above the puffy white clouds, lived a very special little dragon named Sage. Sage wasn't like other dragons you might read about. He didn't breathe fire, and he certainly wasn't scary. Sage was a beautiful soft green, like the new leaves in springtime, and his scales shimmered like tiny pieces of jade.
Every night, Sage would watch the sky. He loved the stars, twinkling like little diamonds, and he especially loved the big, friendly moon. But tonight, Sage noticed something. The moon looked a little tired. It wasn't shining as brightly as usual, and its edges seemed a bit droopy.
“Oh dear,” whispered Sage, his voice as soft as a rustling leaf. “The moon looks sleepy!”
Sage knew just what to do. He gently unfurled his wide, leathery wings. They were so quiet, they didn't even make a whisper as he flew higher and higher, past the tallest mountains and the fluffiest clouds, until he was very close to the sleepy moon.
“Hello, dear Moon,” Sage said, his voice a warm hum. “You look like you need a good rest.”
The moon blinked slowly, its light flickering a little. “Oh, Sage,” it murmured, its voice a soft sigh. “I’ve been up all night, and I just can’t seem to fall asleep.”
Sage smiled. “Don’t worry, Moon. I’m here to help.” He began to circle the moon very, very slowly, his movements graceful and calm. As he flew, he started to hum a quiet, peaceful tune. It was a song he had learned from the gentle breezes, a melody that sounded like crickets chirping and soft waves lapping on a sandy shore.
The moon listened, and as Sage hummed, its light began to soften even more. The sharp edges of the moon seemed to melt, becoming rounder and softer. Sage then stretched out one of his front paws, which was surprisingly soft and warm, and gently stroked the moon’s round, friendly face.
“Shhh,” Sage whispered. “Close your eyes, dear Moon. Let the stars watch over you.”
The moon sighed a very, very contented sigh, and its bright light dimmed to a sleepy glow. Slowly, ever so slowly, the moon closed its big, friendly eye. It was finally asleep, resting peacefully in the night sky, ready to wake up bright and refreshed for another night.
Sage watched the sleeping moon for a little while, making sure it was truly slumbering. Then, he began his journey back home. As he flew, he felt a lovely warmth spread through his own body. Helping the moon had made him feel sleepy too. His eyelids started to feel heavy, and his hum became quieter and quieter.
He glided down, down, down, past the sleepy clouds, until he landed softly in his cozy nest. He snuggled into the warm leaves, closing his own eyes. The last thing Sage heard was the gentle hush of the night, knowing that he had helped his friend, the moon, drift off to a peaceful sleep. And with a soft little sigh, Sage, too, fell into a deep and happy slumber.
