Nora's City Lullaby

A story for: Nora, Age 6

Created August 02, 2026

Nora snuggled deep into her soft, warm bed. Outside her window, the big city was getting ready for sleep too. She watched a little red car drive by, its headlights making small circles of light on the street, like sleepy eyes blinking.

The tall buildings, usually so busy and bright, now had fewer lights on. Each one that twinkled looked like a tiny star, scattered across the dark, velvet sky. Nora imagined a friendly giant was gently turning them off, one by one, whispering goodnight to each window.

She heard the distant, soft hum of the city. It wasn't a loud, roaring sound like in the daytime. No, tonight it was a quiet, purring sound, like a contented cat settling down for a long nap. It was the sound of everyone in the city, tucked into their own beds, dreaming happy dreams.

Nora closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She pictured the big, round moon, high above the tallest skyscraper, shining down like a friendly nightlight. Its gentle glow made everything look peaceful and calm.

She imagined the park she played in today, now quiet and still. The swings hung perfectly still, waiting for morning. The slides were shiny and cool, reflecting the moon's light. Even the friendly squirrels were fast asleep in their cozy nests, dreaming of acorns.

Her favorite ice cream shop, with its bright, colorful sign, was dark now. The yummy smell of chocolate and vanilla was gone, replaced by the fresh, cool scent of the night. Tomorrow, it would be open again, ready for new adventures.

Nora thought about the little yellow taxi cabs, usually zipping here and there. Now, they were parked neatly in rows, resting their tires and getting ready for a new day. Even the big, rumbling buses were quiet, their engines taking a long, well-deserved break.

The city felt like a big, cozy blanket, tucked in around everyone. And Nora was a little button, snuggled safely inside. The gentle hum of the night was like a lullaby, soft and sweet, rocking her to sleep.

Her eyelids felt heavy, like two tiny clouds. She imagined floating gently on a cloud, drifting slowly over the sleeping city. The streetlights below looked like tiny jewels, sparkling in the darkness. The air was cool and peaceful, wrapping around her like a warm hug.

Nora yawned a big, sleepy yawn. The city was almost completely quiet now, just soft whispers of the night. She felt herself sinking deeper and deeper into her bed, her breathing becoming slow and even. The last thing she saw before her eyes closed completely was a friendly, twinkling light in a faraway window, winking goodnight. And then, Nora was fast asleep, dreaming of soft clouds and moonlit streets.
