Milo and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Milo, Age 7

Created September 15, 2026

Deep in the Whispering Woods, where the trees hummed lullabies to the breeze, lived a little dragon named Milo. Milo wasn't like the big, fiery dragons in stories. His scales were the color of a soft evening sky, and his breath smelled of warm vanilla and sleepy dust. He loved to watch the stars twinkle into existence each night.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the hills, Milo noticed something peculiar. The moon, usually so bright and round, looked a little... tired. Its glow was dim, like a nightlight that had been on all day, and it seemed to be wobbling ever so slightly in the sky. Milo tilted his head, his gentle eyes full of concern.

He fluttered his small, leathery wings and soared up, up, up, until he was close enough to whisper to the great, sleepy orb. “Hello, Moon,” he murmured softly. “Are you alright? You look a bit droopy tonight.”

The Moon sighed, a long, quiet sigh that rustled the leaves on the tallest trees. “Oh, Milo,” it whispered back, its voice like the gentle rustle of silk. “I’m just so sleepy. I’ve been up all day, helping the sun with its light, and now it’s my turn to shine, but I can barely keep my eyes open.”

Milo understood. He often felt sleepy after a long day of exploring the woods. “Maybe you need a lullaby?” he suggested, hovering gently beside the Moon.

The Moon’s light flickered with a hopeful glimmer. “A lullaby? Oh, that would be lovely, dear Milo.”

Milo thought hard. What kind of song would help a big, bright moon fall asleep? He closed his eyes and began to hum, a soft, purring sound that vibrated through his chest. It was a tune he’d heard the forest stream sing as it meandered to the river, a gentle gurgle and splash. He added words, soft and sweet.

“Sleep, oh, sleep, my dearest Moon, Rest until the morning soon. Twinkle little sleepy light, Dream of stars that shine so bright.”

As Milo sang, he gently blew his vanilla-scented breath towards the Moon. It wasn’t a fiery breath, but a warm, comforting puff, like a soft blanket. The Moon’s edges began to soften, and its light grew even dimmer, a peaceful, sleepy glow.

Milo continued to sing, his voice growing softer and softer, like the very last note of a music box. He imagined little fluffy clouds acting as pillows for the Moon, and the distant stars as tiny, watchful friends. The Moon began to drift, slowly, gracefully, across the sky, its tired wobble replaced by a smooth, deep slumber.

Soon, the Moon was completely asleep, a beautiful, peaceful presence in the velvet night. Milo smiled, a quiet, happy smile. His job was done. He floated back down to his cozy nest in the Whispering Woods, feeling a pleasant tiredness settle over him. As he curled up, snuggling into his soft moss bed, he heard the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant, sleepy hum of the forest. The world was quiet, safe, and sound. Milo closed his eyes, and with a soft sigh of his own, drifted off to sleep, dreaming of moonbeams and quiet lullabies.
