Arlo and the Whispering Castle

A story for: Arlo, Age 7

Created August 24, 2026

Once upon a time, nestled amongst hills that glowed purple and pink in the evening light, stood a magnificent castle. It wasn't just any castle; this was the Whispering Castle, and its gentle stones hummed lullabies when the moonbeams kissed its ancient walls. Inside, in a cozy turret room with a window that overlooked a sleepy meadow, lived a kind young boy named Arlo.

Tonight, as the stars began to twinkle like spilled sugar across a velvet cloth, Arlo snuggled deep into his soft, fluffy bed. His favorite stuffed dragon, Sparkle, lay beside him, its sequins shimmering faintly in the dim light. Arlo loved bedtime. It was when the castle shared its secrets.

He closed his eyes, listening. First, he heard the soft rustle of the wind, like a giant invisible hand gently stroking the castle's tall flags. *Swish, swish*, it whispered, a sound like silk brushing against silk. Then came the gentle creak of the old wooden floors, telling tales of knights and princesses who had walked these very halls long, long ago. *Creak, creak*, it murmured, a comforting, familiar sound.

Arlo imagined the little dust motes dancing in the moonlight that streamed through his window, twirling and swirling like tiny, silent ballerinas. He pictured the sleepy trees outside, their branches swaying in slow, graceful bows, ready for their own night's rest.

The castle had a special way of making everything feel safe and sound. The thick stone walls kept out any chilly breezes, and the gentle sounds of the night just wrapped around him like a warm blanket. He felt the soft weight of his comforter, like a friendly cloud settled over him.

Arlo took a deep, sleepy breath. He imagined himself floating on a cloud, drifting slowly through the starry sky, past the friendly moon, and over the dreaming hills. He could feel the peaceful quiet all around him, a quiet that hummed with happy dreams.

His eyelids felt heavy, so wonderfully heavy. Sparkle the dragon felt warm and soft against his cheek. The Whispering Castle continued its gentle lullaby, a symphony of soft rustles, gentle creaks, and the quiet, steady beat of Arlo's own peaceful heart.

As the last whisper of the wind drifted past his window, Arlo let out a soft sigh. He was safe, he was warm, and he was loved. And with a final, contented little wiggle, Arlo drifted off to sleep, tucked securely in his cozy bed within the Whispering Castle, ready for a night full of sweet, happy dreams.
