A story for: Ava, Age 7
Created August 30, 2026
The stars were beginning to twinkle like tiny diamonds scattered across a velvet cloth, and the sky was turning a soft, sleepy shade of lavender and rose. Seven-year-old Ava snuggled deep into her covers, but tonight, something felt a little different. She peeked out her window and noticed the moon. It looked a bit… restless.
The moon, usually so round and peaceful, was wobbling gently, casting shifty shadows instead of steady, comforting light. Ava knew the moon helped everyone sleep, but who helped the moon when it couldn't rest?
Just then, a soft, shimmering glow appeared at her window. It wasn't a firefly, but something much, much bigger. A friendly dragon, the color of twilight skies with scales that sparkled like moonlight, drifted closer. His name was Lumina, and he had kind, sleepy eyes.
“Hello, Ava,” Lumina whispered, his voice like the rustling of soft leaves. “I see you’ve noticed our friend, the Moon. She’s having a little trouble drifting off tonight. Too many dreams are bouncing around in her silvery mind.”
Ava’s eyes widened. “The Moon has dreams?”
Lumina nodded slowly. “Oh yes, beautiful dreams of sleepy villages and quiet forests. But sometimes, they get all tangled up, and she can’t quite settle down.”
“Can we help her?” Ava asked, a gentle warmth spreading through her.
“Indeed,” Lumina purred. He opened his mouth, not to breathe fire, but to hum a tune so soft and soothing it made Ava’s eyelids feel heavy. It sounded like the quiet whisper of the wind through tall grass, mixed with the gentle sigh of ocean waves.
As Lumina hummed, he gently blew tiny, shimmering bubbles towards the Moon. Each bubble was filled with a soft, peaceful color – lavender, baby blue, and pale yellow. They drifted up, up, up, until they reached the Moon, gently popping and releasing their calming colors.
The Moon’s wobbling began to slow. The shifty shadows softened into steady, gentle light. Ava watched, mesmerized, as the Moon’s bright glow softened, becoming warm and inviting. It looked like the Moon was finally letting out a big, sleepy sigh.
Lumina finished his lullaby, and a deep sense of peace settled over everything. “There,” he whispered, his voice now even softer. “She’s almost asleep. Just needs a little more quiet to dream her sweet dreams.”
Ava felt her own eyelids growing heavier and heavier. The soft moonlight filled her room, no longer restless, but calm and constant. Lumina gave her a gentle, knowing smile. He drifted back out the window, his sparkling scales slowly fading into the starlit night.
Ava snuggled deeper into her bed. The world outside was hushed and still. She imagined the Moon, now sound asleep, dreaming of quiet rivers and sleeping flowers. And as she imagined, Ava, too, drifted off into a deep, peaceful sleep, surrounded by the gentle lullaby of the quiet night and the steady, comforting glow of the sleeping Moon.
