Remy and the Sleepy Melody

A story for: Remy, Age 4

Created August 04, 2026

The stars began to twinkle, one by one, like tiny silver bells ringing softly in the night sky. Inside, Remy was getting ready for bed. He loved bedtime because it meant quiet time, and quiet time was perfect for listening.

Remy didn't just listen with his ears; he listened with his heart. He could hear the gentle hum of the refrigerator, the soft swish of the leaves outside his window, and sometimes, if he was very, very still, he could hear the sleepy sigh of his puppy, Patches, dreaming happy dreams.

Tonight, Remy wanted to find a special melody, a sleepy melody, to help him drift off to dreamland. He snuggled into his cozy bed, pulling his soft blanket up to his chin. He closed his eyes and took a big, gentle breath in, and then let it out slowly, like a little cloud floating away.

First, Remy listened for the sounds of the house settling down. He heard the gentle creak of the floorboards, like a sleepy giant stretching. *Creeeeak...* It sounded like a low note on a big, warm cello. Then he heard the soft tick-tock of the clock on the wall, a steady, soothing rhythm, like little drums playing very, very quietly. *Tick-tock, tick-tock.*

He imagined the clock playing a lullaby, a steady, comforting beat. Remy imagined the melody getting slower and slower, softer and softer, like a song playing just for him.

Next, Remy listened to the world outside his window. He heard the whisper of the wind, rustling through the trees. *Whoosh-swish, whoosh-swish.* It sounded like a soft brush on a cymbal, or maybe a gentle breeze singing a quiet song. He thought of the wind as a sleepy flute, playing a long, drawn-out note that made everything feel peaceful.

Then, he heard a tiny, almost silent, *drip-drop* from the faucet in the bathroom. *Drip... drop...* It was like tiny, perfect raindrops falling into a still pond. Remy imagined each drop making a little plink, a high, clear note, joining the other sleepy sounds.

Remy took another slow, deep breath. He imagined all these sounds coming together: the creak of the floorboards, the tick-tock of the clock, the whisper of the wind, and the tiny drip-drop of water. They were all playing their own part in a beautiful, sleepy symphony, just for him. The cello, the drums, the flute, the little plinks – they all blended into one perfect, calming melody.

The music filled his room, not with loud sounds, but with gentle, warm notes that wrapped around him like his favorite blanket. Remy felt his eyelids grow heavy, so very heavy. The sleepy melody was getting softer and softer now, fading gently, like the last note of a beautiful song. He snuggled deeper into his bed, listening to the very last, softest note, and drifted off to sleep, with the sleepy melody playing on in his dreams.
