A story for: Mia, Age 5
Created September 25, 2026
Once upon a time, in a city filled with soft, warm lights, lived a little girl named Mia. Mia loved her city, especially at night when it sparkled like a giant treasure chest. Tonight, as the sun dipped down like a sleepy orange balloon, Mia snuggled into her bed, her favorite fluffy bunny, Barnaby, tucked right beside her.
From her window, Mia could see the tall buildings, like friendly giants standing guard, each with tiny squares of light that looked like sleepy eyes winking. "Goodnight, city," Mia whispered, her voice soft as a butterfly's wing.
The sounds of the city were gentle tonight. The faraway hum of a bus sounded like a giant bee buzzing a lullaby. The faint, happy chatter of people walking by sounded like little crickets singing a sweet song. Even the swish of car tires on the wet street seemed to whisper, "Sleepy time, sleepy time."
Mia closed her eyes for a moment and imagined the city getting ready for bed, just like her. She pictured the big, bright signs turning off, one by one, like candles being blown out. She imagined the busy shops closing their doors, their colorful toys and clothes dreaming of new adventures tomorrow. Even the big, rumbling trains in the distance seemed to slow down, their whistles softer, like a gentle sigh.
"Barnaby," Mia murmured, stroking his soft, pink ear, "do you think the moon watches over the city while it sleeps?"
Barnaby, of course, didn't answer, but Mia imagined he nodded his head, his button eyes twinkling. She looked up at the moon, a big, round cookie in the sky, casting a silvery glow over everything. It made the rooftops shine and the little puddles on the street shimmer like tiny mirrors.
Mia thought of all the other children in the city, tucked into their beds, listening to the same gentle sounds. She imagined them dreaming sweet dreams, just like she hoped to. Maybe they were dreaming of flying high above the tallest buildings, or playing hide-and-seek with the friendly giant buildings.
The soft pillow felt like a cloud under her head, and her cozy blanket was warm as a hug. The city sounds outside her window blended together into a calming melody. The distant hum, the gentle whispers, the soft swish – they all sang her a lullaby. Mia’s eyelids felt heavier and heavier, like two little feathers drifting down. She took a deep breath, a long, slow breath that filled her with peace.
With Barnaby nestled close, and the twinkling city lights watching over her like a thousand sleepy stars, Mia drifted off to sleep, her dreams as soft and peaceful as the quiet city night.
