Wren's Rainbow Dream

A story for: Wren, Age 7

Created September 05, 2026

Wren snuggled under her soft, blue blanket, the one with tiny silver stars that glowed faintly in the dim light. Outside, the world was quiet, tucked in for the night, just like Wren. Her eyes, usually sparkling with curiosity, were beginning to feel a little heavy.

Tonight, Wren’s mommy had told her about a very special sky, a sky woven with all the colors of a rainbow, a sky that only appeared in the gentle moments between wakefulness and sleep. Wren closed her eyes, trying to imagine such a beautiful sight.

Slowly, softly, a new world began to unfurl behind her eyelids. It wasn't the dark ceiling of her room anymore. Instead, she saw a vast, shimmering expanse. Above her, streaks of softest pink blended into warm orange, then flowed into a sunny yellow. These colors weren't bright and dazzling like a daytime rainbow; they were gentle, like a whisper.

As Wren watched, a wave of emerald green drifted lazily across the sky, painting the air with its calm hue. It mingled with the yellow, creating new shades of lime and mint. Wren felt a gentle breeze, not cold, but cool and comforting, carrying the scent of sweet blossoms she couldn't quite name. She imagined little cloud-sheep, fluffy and white, slowly munching on the green sky, making it even softer.

Then came the blues. Deep, peaceful indigo spread out, reminding Wren of her favorite blueberry jam. Lighter, sky-blue swirled in, like her daddy’s softest shirt. The blue parts of the sky felt like a quiet lullaby, humming a tune only she could hear. Wren imagined she could almost float up into this sky, to touch the gentle colors and feel their warmth and coolness all at once.

The most magical part was the purple. A rich, royal lavender began to unfurl, like a secret message from the stars. It mixed with the blues, creating dreamy shades of violet. This was the color of magic, Wren thought, the color of wishes and quiet dreams. She pictured tiny, shimmering dew-drops clinging to the purple clouds, reflecting the light of all the other colors.

In this rainbow sky, there were no sharp edges, no rushing winds. Everything was soft, flowing, and peaceful. The colors moved like slow-motion paint, swirling and blending, creating new, wonderful shades right before her eyes. She felt safe and warm, as if the whole sky was a giant, comforting blanket wrapped around her.

Wren yawned a big, sleepy yawn. The colors in her special sky began to deepen, becoming richer and more profound as the edges blurred. The pinks and oranges became sunset hues, the greens and blues deepened into twilight. The purples shimmered like a velvet curtain drawing closed.

Her breathing slowed, becoming soft and even. The image of the rainbow sky lingered, a beautiful, comforting picture in her mind. As the last gentle shade of indigo melted into a peaceful, starry darkness, Wren drifted completely into the quiet, colorful world of her dreams, a tiny smile playing on her lips.
