Cleo and the Dream Lantern

A story for: Cleo, Age 6

Created September 16, 2026

The forest was beginning to hum with sleepy sounds. Little birds tucked their heads under their wings, and the tall trees whispered their goodnights. But deep inside her cozy burrow, a small bunny named Cleo was still wide awake. Cleo had the softest white fur and the biggest, most curious brown eyes. Tonight, those eyes were sparkling with a little bit of worry.

“Oh, Mama,” she sniffed, “what if I can’t find my dreams tonight?”

Cleo’s Mama, with fur as soft as a cloud, gently nuzzled her daughter’s head. “My sweet Cleo,” she murmured, “dreams are always there, waiting for you. Sometimes, they just need a little light to guide them.”

Suddenly, a tiny flicker of light danced through the burrow entrance. It wasn't the moon, and it wasn't a star. It was a beautiful, tiny lantern, no bigger than Cleo’s paw. It floated gently, casting a warm, golden glow around the room.

Cleo gasped, her eyes wide with wonder. “What is it, Mama?”

“That, my dear,” Mama whispered, “is the Dream Lantern. It only appears for the bravest little bunnies, the ones who are ready to explore the magic of their own minds.”

The Dream Lantern spun playfully, as if inviting Cleo to follow. Cleo hesitated for just a moment. It was a little bit exciting, and a little bit new. But she remembered Mama’s words about being brave. Taking a deep breath, Cleo hopped out of bed, her little nose twitching with anticipation.

The lantern led her on a soft, glowing path. It wasn’t a path through the forest, but a path made of shimmering moonlight and sparkly dust, right inside her own cozy burrow! It felt like floating on a fluffy cloud. The lantern danced ahead, showing her beautiful pictures: fields of bright, colorful flowers that smelled like sunshine, friendly butterflies with wings like jewels, and even a bouncy, giggling river that sang a sleepy song.

Each picture the lantern showed her made Cleo feel warmer and happier. She saw herself hopping and playing with her friends, giggling as they chased dandelion seeds. She saw herself sharing a delicious carrot with Mama. The light of the lantern filled her heart with peace and joy.

The Dream Lantern slowly dimmed, its glow becoming softer and softer, like a gentle goodnight kiss. It floated back to her bedside, casting a final, tiny shimmer before settling down, ready for the next night.

Cleo snuggled back into her warm bed, feeling so very calm. The worries about finding her dreams had completely disappeared. The light of the Dream Lantern had shown her that her dreams were always close by, full of wonderful adventures and happy feelings. With a soft sigh, Cleo closed her big brown eyes, a gentle smile playing on her lips. She was ready now. The beautiful, peaceful dreams were waiting, bathed in the soft, golden glow of the lantern, and Cleo drifted into a deep, happy sleep.
