Sage's Sleepy Song

A story for: Sage, Age 6

Created July 07, 2026

Far, far away, in the deepest, bluest part of the ocean, lived a magnificent whale named Sage. Sage was not just any whale; she was a very special whale with a very special job. Every night, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in sleepy oranges and purples, Sage would begin her work.

Her job was to sing the ocean to sleep. And what a beautiful song it was! Sage’s voice was like the softest lullaby, a gentle hum that drifted through the water, touching every little fish, every drifting jellyfish, and every sleepy sea turtle.

Tonight, as the first stars twinkled high above, Sage took a deep, gentle breath. Her enormous body, as long as a school bus, glowed softly in the fading light. Then, from deep within her, a sound began to emerge. It started as a low, rumbling hum, like the sound of a distant, friendly purr. It vibrated through the water, making the tiny plankton dance slowly, and the sleepy clams close their shells a little tighter.

“Mmmmmm-hmmm,” Sage hummed, her song growing a little clearer. The small, quick darting fish slowed their fin-flapping, their eyes growing heavy. The big, slow-moving manta rays folded their wings and settled gently onto the sandy seabed.

Sage swam slowly, gracefully, her song echoing all around her. She sang about the soft sway of the kelp forests, how they danced in the current like sleepy dancers. She sang about the sparkling moonbeams that would soon peek through the water, turning the ocean into a magical, shimmering world.

Her voice was like a warm blanket, tucked gently around all the creatures of the sea. The little seahorses curled their tails around seaweed stems, dreaming of peaceful coral gardens. The shy octopuses pulled their many arms in close, feeling safe and sound.

As Sage continued her song, the ocean grew quieter and quieter. The busy daytime splashes faded away, replaced by the soft whisper of the waves against the shore far above. Even the great, strong currents seemed to slow down, listening to Sage’s calming tune.

She sang her very softest note, a final, lingering melody that felt like a gentle kiss goodnight. The last sleepy fish closed its eyes. The last little crab burrowed into the sand. The entire ocean was now deep in peaceful slumber, cradled by Sage’s beautiful song.

Sage, her job done, let out a contented sigh. She too, felt the deep calm of the night. She floated, suspended in the dark, peaceful water, listening to the quiet rhythm of her own heart. And as the moon climbed higher, casting silver light into the depths, Sage closed her own big, kind eyes, and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the calm, happy ocean she had sung to rest.
