A story for: Ava, Age 4
Created September 17, 2026
The city lights twinkled like a thousand sleepy stars in the deep blue night sky. Little Ava was tucked snugly in her bed, her favorite fluffy bear, Barnaby, nestled beside her. From her window, she could see the tall buildings, each one glowing with soft, warm light.
"Goodnight, city," Ava whispered, her voice barely a breath. She loved her city, especially at night. It wasn't noisy like during the day, with all the cars honking and people rushing. At night, the city hummed a gentle, sleepy song.
First, Ava watched the big buses. During the day, they zoomed along, taking people everywhere. But now, they were parked quietly in their big garages, resting until morning. Ava imagined them dreaming of all the happy trips they would take.
Next, she looked at the little yellow taxis. They looked like tiny jewels scattered on the streets, some still moving, but very slowly, like they were tiptoeing home. Soon, they would all be asleep too, waiting for a new day to begin.
The tall buildings, which had been so busy all day with people working and playing, now had only a few lights on. Ava imagined families snuggled inside, just like her, reading stories or listening to quiet music. Each light was like a little window into a cozy, peaceful home.
Ava yawned a big, wide yawn. She closed her eyes for a moment, and when she opened them again, she saw the streetlights. They stood tall and straight, like friendly guardians, watching over the city as it slept. Their soft glow made the pavement look like silver ribbons.
Barnaby, her fluffy bear, gave a tiny, pretend snore. Ava giggled softly. She hugged Barnaby closer. "Even the city needs to sleep, Barnaby," she whispered. "And so do we."
She thought of the big park she played in during the day. Now, the swings were still, and the slide was empty. Even the little birds were quiet in their nests high in the trees. Everything was resting, gathering energy for a new day of play and fun.
The moon, a gentle crescent shape, peeked from behind a cloud, casting a soft, silvery light into Ava's room. It was like a sleepy smile in the sky. Ava's eyelids felt heavy, so heavy. She snuggled deeper into her blankets, the soft sounds of the sleeping city outside her window like a lullaby just for her.
She closed her eyes one last time, a tiny smile on her face. The city was safe and sound, and so was she. Drifting off to dreamland, Ava imagined floating among the twinkling city lights, as peaceful as could be.
