A story for: Ruby, Age 4
Created July 11, 2026
Tonight was a very special night for Ruby. Instead of her cozy bed with the unicorn quilt, she was going to sleep in a tent right in her own backyard! Her mommy and daddy had helped her set it up, and inside, her sleeping bag looked like a fluffy green caterpillar, all ready for her to snuggle into.
After a warm bath and a silly story, Ruby put on her softest pajamas, the ones with the little blue stars. She carried her favorite teddy bear, Barnaby, out to the tent. The air felt cool and smelled like fresh grass and a little bit like the campfire marshmallows they had toasted earlier.
Inside the tent, Daddy shone a flashlight around. "Look, Ruby!" he whispered, pointing to the ceiling of the tent. "It's like our own little house, just for tonight!"
Ruby giggled. She snuggled deep into her sleeping bag, Barnaby tucked tightly under her arm. Mommy gave her a kiss on her forehead. "Sleep tight, little star-gazer," she said softly.
Soon, it was just Ruby and Barnaby in the quiet tent. Ruby lay on her back, looking up. The tent had a little mesh window right at the top, like a secret peek-a-boo door to the sky. And tonight, the sky was filled with the most beautiful, sparkly things she had ever seen.
Tiny lights twinkled all over the dark blue blanket of the night. Each one was a star, just like the ones on her pajamas. Ruby imagined they were little diamonds sprinkled by a giant, friendly hand. Some were bright and big, others were small and shy, peeking out from behind a fluffy white cloud.
She watched them for a long time. It felt like the stars were winking at her, saying, "Good night, Ruby. Sleep well."
The cool night air made her feel extra cozy inside her sleeping bag. She listened to the gentle sounds of the night: a cricket chirping a lullaby, a soft rustle of leaves in the breeze, and the distant, hooting sound of an owl saying, "Whooo's there? Sleep, sleep, sleep."
Ruby closed her eyes for a moment, then opened them again. The stars were still there, sparkling just for her. Barnaby felt so soft and warm against her cheek. She took a deep breath, filling her nose with the clean, fresh smell of the night.
Slowly, her eyelids started to feel heavy, like two little sleepy butterflies. The stars began to blur into soft, glowing dots. The cricket's song became a gentle hum, and the owl's hoot faded into a sleepy whisper. Ruby imagined she was floating among the stars, soft and safe, until she drifted off to sleep, dreaming of sparkly diamonds in the sky.
