Sage and the Starry Blanket

A story for: Sage, Age 6

Created October 22, 2026

Tonight, as the moon peeked shyly from behind a fluffy cloud, little Sage snuggled deep into her warm bed. Her favorite teddy, Barnaby, was tucked under one arm, and her softest blanket, embroidered with tiny, glow-in-the-dark stars, was pulled right up to her chin.

“Goodnight, little star,” whispered a gentle voice. Sage giggled. She loved bedtime stories, especially when they were just for her.

“Tonight’s story,” the voice continued, soft and calm like a flowing river, “is about a special little explorer named Sage. Every evening, as the sun dipped below the hills, painting the sky in shades of orange and purple, Sage would get ready for her most wonderful adventure: dreamland.

But before she could float off to sleep, Sage had a very important job. She had to collect all the sleepy-time sparkles from the day. These weren't ordinary sparkles; they were the happy giggles, the warm hugs, the kind words, and the exciting discoveries from her day.

Today, Sage had found a bright red ladybug on a green leaf. *Pop!* A tiny red sparkle floated into her imaginary collecting jar. She had built a magnificent tower of blocks that reached almost to the ceiling. *Twinkle!* A tall, colorful sparkle joined the ladybug one. Her mommy had read her a silly book that made her laugh until her tummy hurt. *Giggle!* A bubbly, golden sparkle danced inside the jar.

Sage closed her eyes, imagining each sparkle as the story continued. She remembered the soft purr of the kitty she had petted, the sweet taste of a strawberry, and the comforting sound of her daddy singing a song. Each memory added another beautiful, shimmering sparkle to her jar, filling it to the brim with all the loveliness of her day.

When her jar was full, Sage would tip it upside down, and all the sleepy-time sparkles would gently rain down, not on the floor, but all around her. They would settle on her eyelids, making them feel heavy and soft. They would land on her pillow, making it extra fluffy and cloud-like. And some would even drift onto her starry blanket, making the glow-in-the-dark stars shine even brighter, like tiny nightlights just for her.

As the story wound down, Sage felt the sleepy-time sparkles gently falling all around her. Her eyelids were getting heavier and heavier, just like in the story. The room felt warm and safe. Barnaby, tucked close, felt soft and real. The little stars on her blanket seemed to twinkle just for her, guiding her gently into her dreams.

Sage took a deep, peaceful breath. She was so loved, so safe, and so very, very sleepy. Her adventure to dreamland had begun. And as she drifted off, a soft smile played on her lips, knowing her jar of happy sparkles was waiting to be filled again tomorrow.
