A story for: Ruby, Age 3
Created September 14, 2026
Once upon a time, high above the puffy white clouds, lived a sweet little dragon named Ruby. Ruby wasn't like other dragons you might see in books; she had scales the color of soft lavender, and her wings shimmered like a rainbow when the sunlight touched them. Instead of breathing fiery smoke, Ruby breathed out tiny, warm, sparkly puffs that smelled like cinnamon and sleepy-time tea.
Every night, just as the sky turned a gentle orange and pink, Ruby would fly up, up, up into the sky. Her favorite thing to do was to visit her very best friend, the Moon. Tonight, as Ruby glided closer, she noticed something wasn't quite right. The Moon, usually so bright and round, looked a little droopy. Its light was soft, almost like it was whispering instead of shining.
“Hello, dear Moon!” Ruby cooed, her voice like the gentle tinkling of a wind chime. “Are you feeling alright tonight?”
The Moon sighed a big, sleepy sigh. “Oh, Ruby,” it mumbled, its voice a soft, low hum. “I’m just so, so tired. I’ve been shining all night, every night, for so long. My eyes feel heavy, and I just wish I could close them and rest.”
Ruby’s heart felt a little ouchy for her friend. She loved the Moon’s gentle glow, but she knew everyone needed a good rest. “Don’t you worry, sleepy Moon,” Ruby said, fluttering her rainbow wings. “I know just what to do!”
First, Ruby flew around the Moon in slow, gentle circles. As she flew, she breathed out her warm, sparkly, cinnamon-scented puffs. The puffs floated around the Moon like tiny, soft blankets, making it feel cozy and safe.
Next, Ruby sang a quiet, humming song. It was a song she made up herself, full of soft sounds like ‘shhh’ and ‘zzzzz’ and ‘goodnight, goodnight.’ The Moon’s light grew even softer, and its round face began to look peaceful.
Then, Ruby thought of something extra special. She carefully reached out one of her lavender paws and gently patted the Moon’s big, round cheek. “Shhh, Moon,” she whispered. “Rest your weary eyes. I’ll keep watch tonight.”
The Moon gave another big, satisfied sigh, this time not a tired one, but a happy one. Its light became a tiny, gentle sparkle, and then, very slowly, the Moon closed its big, round eyes. It was finally fast asleep, dreaming sweet, moonlit dreams.
Ruby smiled a contented dragon smile. She floated nearby, her own eyelids beginning to feel a little heavy too. She had helped her friend, and now the world was bathed in a beautiful, soft darkness, safe and quiet. Ruby curled up her tail, tucked her head under one wing, and with a final, tiny, sparkly breath of cinnamon, she drifted off to sleep, dreaming of fluffy clouds and peaceful, sleeping moons.
