Cleo and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Cleo, Age 5

Created October 05, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the whispering treetops and sparkling rivers, lived a very special dragon named Cleo. Cleo wasn't like the big, fire-breathing dragons you might read about in adventure books. Oh no! Cleo was small and shimmery, with scales that sparkled like tiny dewdrops at dawn, and wings as soft as a cloud.

Cleo had a very important job, a job she loved more than anything in the whole wide world. Cleo helped the Moon fall asleep. Every night, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in sleepy oranges and pinks, Cleo would flutter up, up, up into the vast, darkening sky.

Tonight, as Cleo flew, she noticed the Moon looked a little restless. The Moon was usually so round and peaceful, but tonight it was wiggling just a tiny bit, and its light seemed to shimmer with a nervous energy. Cleo knew just what to do.

She gently floated closer, her soft scales glowing faintly. “Hello, dear Moon,” Cleo whispered, her voice like the rustle of autumn leaves. “Are you finding it hard to settle down tonight?”

The Moon sighed, a soft, silent sigh that made the stars twinkle a little faster. *“Oh, Cleo,”* it seemed to say, *“I just can’t seem to close my eyes. My mind is full of all the day’s adventures, and all the little sleepy creatures I’ll be watching tonight.”*

Cleo smiled, a warm, comforting smile. “I understand, my dear Moon. Sometimes, when my own mind is busy, I like to think of all the cozy things.” She began to hum a soft, gentle tune, a lullaby made of starlight and soft breezes. As she hummed, she began to weave a delicate, shimmering blanket of moonbeams. It was a blanket spun from the quiet whispers of sleeping flowers and the gentle sway of the ocean tide.

She carefully draped the moonbeam blanket over the Moon, tucking it in ever so gently. “Now, dear Moon,” Cleo whispered, “let’s think of soft things. Think of fluffy clouds floating by. Think of warm, snuggly beds. Think of soft, sleepy kittens curled up tight.”

As Cleo spoke, the Moon’s wiggling began to slow. The nervous shimmer in its light softened into a gentle, steady glow. Cleo continued to hum, her lullaby wrapping around the Moon like a warm hug. She imagined the Moon closing its big, beautiful eyes, its light becoming a soft, sleepy glow that would watch over all the sleeping world.

Slowly, ever so slowly, the Moon settled down. Its light grew softer and softer, until it was just a peaceful, silver glow in the dark sky. Cleo watched, her own eyes growing heavy. Her job was done. The Moon was sound asleep, dreaming sweet, quiet dreams.

Cleo yawned a tiny, sparkly yawn. It was time for her to sleep too. She drifted down from the sky, her wings barely stirring the air, and found her own cozy cloud to rest upon. She snuggled into its softness, her own dreams beginning to form, dreams of shimmering scales and peaceful moons. With a final, happy sigh, Cleo closed her eyes, ready for a night of quiet, peaceful sleep.
