A story for: Luna, Age 7
Created September 18, 2026
High above the quiet town, where the stars sparkled like tiny diamonds, lived a very special dragon named Luna. Luna wasn't like the dragons in exciting adventure stories. Her scales shimmered in soft shades of lavender and silver, and instead of fire, she breathed out gentle, warm air that smelled faintly of vanilla and starlight.
Every night, Luna had a very important job. Her job was to help the big, round moon fall asleep. You see, the moon worked very hard all night, lighting up the sky and watching over sleepy children. By the time the sun started to peek, the moon was often still wide awake, feeling a little tired but unable to close its eyes.
Tonight, Luna floated gracefully towards the moon, her large, kind eyes twinkling. "Hello, dear Moon," she whispered, her voice like a soft chime. "Are you ready for your rest?"
The Moon, looking a bit droopy, sighed a long, silvery sigh. "Oh, Luna, I am so tired, but my mind is still full of all the night's adventures. The little foxes playing, the owls hooting their songs, the gentle waves on the ocean... I can't seem to switch them off."
Luna smiled gently. "That's perfectly normal, sweet Moon. Let me help." She began to circle the moon very slowly, her soft scales brushing gently against its surface. As she flew, she hummed a quiet, beautiful melody. It wasn't a loud song, but a soft, humming sound that seemed to weave through the air like a silken thread.
Then, Luna began to breathe her special warm air. It wasn't hot, just perfectly cozy, like snuggling under a favorite blanket. The air wrapped around the moon, making it feel safe and loved. As Luna hummed and breathed, she started to tell the moon a story. Not a fast-paced story, but a very slow, sleepy one.
"Once upon a time," Luna began, her voice a gentle whisper, "there was a field of sleepy daisies. Each one closed its petals very, very slowly, one by one, until they were tucked in for the night. And nearby, a little stream gurgled a soft 'shhh, shhh' as it flowed over smooth, round pebbles. The wind whispered lullabies through the tall grass, swaying back and forth, back and forth..."
The Moon’s bright glow began to dim, ever so slightly. Its round face looked less worried and more peaceful. Luna continued her story, her breath making the moon feel lighter and lighter, as if it were floating on a cloud.
"The stars," Luna murmured, "blinked sleepily, one by one, deciding it was time to dream their own sparkling dreams. And the clouds drifted by, like fluffy white sheep, slowly, slowly moving across the vast, dark sky..."
The Moon’s eyelids, which no one had ever seen before, began to droop. Soon, with a final, peaceful sigh, the Moon's light softened to a gentle glow, and then, completely, it closed its eyes. It was fast asleep, dreaming sweet, moonlit dreams.
Luna watched over her sleeping friend for a moment, her own eyes feeling a little heavy now. Her job was done. She drifted slowly back towards her own cozy cloud, the vanilla and starlight scent lingering softly around her. As she snuggled into her cloud, she thought of the sleeping Moon, and the sleepy daisies, and the quiet stream. She closed her own kind eyes, a soft smile on her face, and slowly, gently, Luna, the friendly dragon, fell fast asleep too.
