Jude's Whispering Woods

A story for: Jude, Age 7

Created September 14, 2026

Jude snuggled deep into his soft blankets, the moonlight peeking gently through his window like a sleepy eye. Tonight, his mom had a special surprise. Instead of a book, she brought a small, smooth stone, cool to the touch.

“This isn’t just any stone, Jude,” she whispered, her voice like a soft breeze. “This is a listening stone. It helps us hear the quiet stories the world tells when everyone else is asleep.”

Jude held the stone, feeling its smooth coolness against his palm. He closed his eyes, just like his mom suggested, and listened. At first, he only heard the gentle thump-thump of his own heart. But then, a soft, rustling sound began, like tiny invisible feet dancing on dry leaves. *Swish, swish, rustle, rustle.*

“That’s the wind in the tall pine trees,” his mom murmured, her voice almost part of the sound. “It’s telling stories of the day, of little squirrels scampering up their rough bark, and of wise old owls watching over the forest.”

Jude imagined the tall pines, their needles swaying like sleepy dancers. He could almost smell the fresh, clean scent of pine. The rustling grew softer, turning into a gentle *whoosh, whoosh*, like a quiet sigh.

Next, he heard a delicate *plink, plink, plink*. It was a sound like tiny water droplets falling into a clear, cool pond. Jude pictured a hidden stream, winding its way through mossy rocks, reflecting the moon like a thousand tiny diamonds.

“That’s the little stream, Jude,” his mom whispered. “It’s singing a lullaby to the pebbles and the smooth river stones, telling them sweet dreams of flowing all the way to the big, wide ocean.”

Jude felt a wave of calm wash over him, as peaceful as the gentle stream. The *plink, plink* faded into a soft, steady hum, like a bee buzzing happily around a lavender bush.

Then, the most magical sound of all began. It was a soft, steady rhythm, like a gentle heartbeat, but it wasn't his own. *Crick-et, crick-et, crick-et*. It was the crickets, singing their goodnight song to the stars.

“The crickets are tucking in the flowers for the night,” his mom said, her voice now barely a whisper. “They’re telling them to dream of sunshine and sweet dew drops.”

Jude imagined the little crickets, with their tiny violins, playing their sleepy music. He felt his eyelids grow heavy, just like the flowers closing for the night. The *crick-et, crick-et* became softer and softer, melting into the quiet of his room.

The listening stone felt warm now, a comforting weight in his hand. He took a deep breath, smelling the imaginary pine and the fresh night air. The sounds of the whispering woods wrapped around him like a cozy blanket. Jude drifted, feeling safe and loved, into a sleep as deep and peaceful as the quiet forest under the moon.
