Theo and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Theo, Age 6

Created August 23, 2026

Deep in a valley, where the stars sparkled extra bright, lived a gentle dragon named Theo. Theo wasn't like the dragons in exciting stories; he didn't breathe fire or guard treasure. Theo breathed out soft, shimmery dust that smelled faintly of lavender and starlight, and his scales were the color of a peaceful dusk sky.

Every night, when the sun dipped below the hills, Theo would fly up to his favorite cloud, a big, fluffy one that felt like a marshmallow. From there, he watched the Moon float higher and higher, painting the world in silver. But tonight, Theo noticed something a little different. The Moon looked a bit... droopy. Its usual bright glow seemed a little dim, and it wobbled ever so slightly.

“Oh dear,” Theo whispered, his voice like the rustle of soft leaves. “It looks like the Moon is feeling sleepy tonight.”

The Moon let out a tiny, nearly silent yawn, a little shimmer that spread across the night sky. Theo knew just what to do. He took a deep, gentle breath, and when he breathed out, a cloud of soft, warm dust drifted towards the Moon. It wasn't the kind of dust that made you cough; it was the kind that made you feel cozy and warm, like a hug from your favorite blanket.

The Moon seemed to sigh contentedly as the stardust settled around it. Theo then began to hum, a low, rumbling sound that vibrated through the air, like a distant, friendly purr. It was a lullaby without words, just pure, soothing sound. He hummed about fluffy clouds and quiet streams, about sleepy butterflies and dreaming flowers.

As Theo hummed, he gently nudged the cloud he was on, making it sway ever so slightly, like a cradle. The Moon seemed to snuggle deeper into the night sky, its edges softening. Its light, while still there, became softer, calmer, like a sleepy smile. Theo could tell his friend, the Moon, was finally getting ready for a good night's rest.

He continued to hum, a soft, sleepy song, until the Moon was glowing with a gentle, steady peace. All the little stars around it seemed to twinkle in agreement, understanding that their big, bright friend was finally ready to drift off to sleep. Theo knew his job was done. He watched for a little while longer, making sure the Moon was truly settled.

Then, with a gentle flutter of his wings, Theo drifted down from his cloud. He landed softly in his own cozy nook, a bed of moss that smelled of damp earth and sweet night air. The starlight Theo had breathed out still shimmered gently around him, and the Moon, now completely at peace, cast a soft, sleepy glow through his window. Theo closed his eyes, feeling warm and content, and slowly, gently, he drifted off to sleep, knowing that the Moon, and all the world, was safe and sound.
