A story for: Theo, Age 6
Created September 26, 2026
Deep in the whispery, starlit valley, lived a very special dragon named Theo. Theo wasn't like the dragons in exciting, loud stories. He had scales as soft as moss, eyes that sparkled like dew drops, and a gentle rumble that sounded like a purring kitten. His most important job wasn't guarding treasure or breathing fire; it was helping the moon.
Every night, when the stars began to twinkle, Theo would wake up. He'd stretch his long, graceful neck, and his scales would shimmer in the twilight. He loved the quiet time before the world was completely dark, when the sky was painted in soft purples and oranges.
Tonight, however, Theo noticed something peculiar. The Moon, usually so bright and round, looked a little... tired. Her light was a bit dim, and she seemed to be drifting slowly, as if she might nod off at any moment. Theo knew just what to do.
He spread his great, leathery wings, which moved so silently they didn't even stir a single leaf. He flew higher and higher, past the tallest mountain peaks, until he was floating beside the sleepy Moon. "Good evening, dear Moon," Theo whispered, his voice a warm, comforting breeze.
The Moon blinked slowly. "Oh, Theo," she sighed, her voice like a soft rustle of silk. "I'm so weary tonight. It's been a long day of shining, and I just can't seem to settle down for my rest."
Theo nuzzled her gently with his snout. "Don't you worry, kind Moon. I'm here to help you sleep. What would make you feel most peaceful?"
The Moon thought for a moment. "Perhaps... a lullaby?" she murmured, her light flickering even more faintly.
So, Theo began to hum. It wasn't a loud hum, but a deep, comforting vibration that made the starlight around them feel even softer. He sang about the quiet clouds drifting by, about the sleepy flowers closing their petals, and about the little streams gurgling themselves to sleep. His song was like a warm blanket, wrapping around the Moon.
As Theo sang, he gently nudged a few wispy clouds to drift closer, creating a soft, fluffy pillow for the Moon to rest upon. He blew a gentle breath, cool and refreshing, to soothe her tired edges. The stars, listening in, seemed to shine a little less brightly, out of respect for the Moon's impending slumber.
Slowly, ever so slowly, the Moon's light grew dimmer. Her round shape seemed to soften, and her gentle glow became a peaceful hum. Theo continued his lullaby, his voice a steady, comforting presence in the vast night sky. He saw her eyes close, a tiny, contented sigh escaping her. The Moon was finally asleep, tucked safely into her cloud bed, dreaming peaceful moon-dreams.
Theo watched over her for a little while longer, making sure no stray meteorites came too close. Then, feeling very content, he began his slow, graceful descent back to the valley. The world below was now completely dark, illuminated only by the sleeping Moon's gentle, lingering glow. Theo found his own cozy spot under a big, ancient oak tree. He curled up, his scales shimmering faintly, and with the soft echo of his lullaby in his heart, Theo, too, drifted off to sleep, ready for another night of helping the Moon.
