A story for: Sage, Age 7
Created September 03, 2026
Far, far below the shimmering surface of the ocean, in a world of soft, swaying kelp forests and gentle currents, lived a very special whale named Sage. Sage wasn't the biggest whale, nor the fastest, but she had the most beautiful singing voice in all the deep blue sea. Her songs were like shimmering pearls, floating through the water, warm and gentle.
Every evening, as the sun began its sleepy journey below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Sage would begin her important work. It was her job to sing the ocean to sleep. She knew just how to make the busy daytime world of the sea slow down and get ready for a peaceful night.
First, Sage would take a deep, slow breath, her enormous lungs filling with the cool ocean air. Then, a soft, low hum would begin. It was a sound that made the little darting fish pause and turn their tiny fins a little slower. The playful dolphins, who had been leaping and splashing all day, would quiet their chattering and swim in gentle circles around her.
Her song would grow, not louder, but richer, like velvet unfolding. She sang about the soft sand on the seabed, smooth and cool. She sang about the ancient, wise coral reefs, dreaming quiet dreams. She sang about the moon, a pale silver coin that would soon peek through the water's surface, casting sleepy shadows.
The hermit crabs, tucked safely in their borrowed shells, would feel a calm wash over them, pulling their tiny eyes deeper inside. The majestic manta rays, who usually glided with such purpose, would slow their graceful dance, their wide wings barely stirring the water. Even the currents, which could be so lively during the day, seemed to soften and flow with a sleepy rhythm, rocking everything in a gentle sway.
Sage's voice was like a warm blanket, tucked around every creature in the ocean. It told them it was safe to rest, safe to dream. The water around her glowed faintly with the magic of her melody, a soft, blue light that comforted all who heard it.
As the very last hint of daylight faded from the sky above, Sage would sing her final, most tender notes. These were the notes that whispered, "Goodnight, dear ocean. Rest now. Dream sweet dreams until the sun awakens you again." Then, with a gentle flick of her powerful tail, she would drift downwards, finding a quiet, cozy spot among the soft seaweed. She would close her big, kind eyes, feeling the gentle sway of the water, lulled by the very lullaby she had just sung. Soon, Sage herself was fast asleep, dreaming of starry nights and quiet depths, her heart full of peace.
