Ava and the Moon's Lullaby

A story for: Ava, Age 5

Created October 18, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the quiet world, lived a very special little girl named Ava. Ava had the kindest eyes and a heart full of stardust. Every night, before she tucked herself into bed, she would gaze out her window at the big, round moon. Tonight, the moon looked a little sleepy itself, its glow a soft, buttery yellow.

Suddenly, a gentle whoosh filled the air, and a friendly, emerald-green dragon with scales that sparkled like tiny jewels landed softly on Ava's windowsill. This was Flicker, Ava's secret best friend. Flicker wasn't like other dragons; he loved quiet nights and soft whispers, and his breath smelled faintly of warm milk and honey.

“Good evening, Ava,” Flicker rumbled, his voice like a cozy purr. “The Moon seems to be having trouble drifting off tonight. Do you think we could help?”

Ava’s eyes widened. “The Moon needs help sleeping? Oh, poor Moon!” She loved helping, and the idea of helping the Moon was simply wonderful.

“Indeed,” Flicker said, nodding his great head. “It needs a lullaby, I believe. A very special one.”

Ava thought for a moment. What kind of lullaby would the Moon like? She knew the Moon saw everything. “Maybe,” she suggested, “it would like a song about all the sleepy things in the world?”

Flicker smiled, a slow, gentle smile that showed his pearly-white teeth. “That’s a perfect idea, Ava. Let’s go.”

Carefully, Ava climbed onto Flicker’s broad, warm back. His scales felt smooth and comforting. With another soft whoosh, they lifted into the night sky, flying higher and higher until they were close enough to touch the fluffy clouds. The air was cool and smelled of fresh rain.

They floated beside the great, silver Moon, which seemed to be sighing a little. Ava began to sing, her voice soft and sweet. “Sleepy little birdies in their nest, with their fluffy feathers at their rest. Sleepy little bunnies in the grass, dreaming happy dreams that always last.”

Flicker joined in, his deep rumble adding a soothing harmony. “Sleepy little kittens, curled up tight, waiting for the morning’s gentle light. Sleepy little flowers, closing slow, dreaming of the sunshine’s golden glow.”

As they sang, Ava saw the Moon’s edges soften. Its bright glow became a little dimmer, its round face looking more peaceful. They sang of sleepy rivers flowing to the sea, of sleepy trees swaying gently in the breeze, and of sleepy stars twinkling themselves to sleep.

With each verse, the Moon’s sleepy blinks grew slower and slower. Soon, its light was just a soft, warm hum in the sky, and its face was completely at peace. It was truly, wonderfully asleep.

Flicker gently carried Ava back to her window. He nudged her softly with his nose. “You did it, Ava,” he whispered. “You helped the Moon fall asleep.”

Ava yawned a tiny yawn. Her eyelids felt heavy, just like the sleepy Moon’s. She snuggled into her bed, pulling her blanket up to her chin. The room was bathed in the soft, sleepy glow from the now slumbering Moon. Ava closed her eyes, feeling safe and warm and loved. As Flicker quietly flew away, Ava drifted off to sleep herself, dreaming of moonbeams and friendly dragon purrs.
