Jude's Starfish Dream

A story for: Jude, Age 6

Created September 10, 2026

The sun dipped low, painting the sky with soft, sleepy colors of peach and lilac. Little Jude, his eyes already a little droopy, snuggled into his cozy bed. He thought about his wonderful day at the beach, and a gentle smile played on his lips.

Today, the sand had been warm and soft, like a giant fluffy blanket. Jude had spent hours building the most magnificent sandcastle ever! It had tall towers with tiny seashell flags fluttering from the top, and a wide moat filled with sparkling water. He even found a perfect, pearly-white scallop shell to be its front door.

He remembered digging his toes into the cool, wet sand as the ocean waves tickled his feet. Each wave whispered a little secret as it rolled onto the shore, then giggled as it pulled back into the big, blue sea. Jude loved how the waves sounded, like a soft lullaby.

His favorite part of the day was finding a bright orange starfish. It wasn't moving, just resting gently on the sand, like a sleeping flower. Jude carefully picked it up, marveling at its five perfect arms and the tiny bumps on its skin. He whispered a little 'hello' to it, and then gently placed it back into a tide pool, so it could swim home when the water returned.

Now, as he closed his eyes, Jude could still feel the warmth of the sun on his cheeks and hear the gentle whoosh of the waves. He imagined the starfish, now wide awake, doing a sleepy dance under the moonlight. Maybe it was swimming with little sparkly fish, or playing hide-and-seek among the swaying seaweed.

He thought of the gulls, who had soared high above the ocean, their wings catching the last rays of sunshine. They looked like tiny paper airplanes floating in the big, blue sky. And the little crabs, scuttling sideways, looking for hidden treasures in the sand. They were probably tucked into their sandy beds now too, dreaming of tasty snacks.

Jude yawned a big, sleepy yawn. His bed felt like a cloud, and his blanket was as soft as the foamy sea spray. He pictured the sandcastle, standing tall and proud in the moonlight, waiting for the sun to wake it up again tomorrow. The little seashell flags would be gently swaying, even in the quiet night.

The sound of the waves in his mind grew softer and softer, like a whispered secret. He felt safe and warm, surrounded by the happy memories of his beach day. His breathing became slow and steady, just like the gentle rhythm of the ocean. And as the last image of the bright orange starfish danced behind his eyelids, little Jude drifted off to sleep, dreaming of sunshine, sandcastles, and the peaceful, rolling sea.
