Arlo's City Lullaby

A story for: Arlo, Age 7

Created August 31, 2026

The city was a giant, sleepy creature, and Arlo was nestled right in its gentle heart. From his bedroom window, high up in a cozy apartment building, he could see the last shimmers of twilight painting the sky in soft purples and oranges. It was like a big, beautiful watercolor art project, just for him.

Tonight, Arlo was imagining his city as a friend. Not a loud, bustling friend like it was during the day, but a quiet, humming friend, getting ready for bed itself. The streetlights, one by one, began to wink on, like little yellow eyes opening in the dusk. "Good evening, streetlights," Arlo whispered, snuggling deeper into his blankets, which smelled faintly of sunshine and his mom's special lavender laundry soap.

The cars below made a soft, whooshing sound, like waves far off at the beach. Each whoosh carried a sleepy little wish on its back, a wish for quiet dreams and peaceful slumber. Arlo watched a few more cars drift by, their headlights glowing like sleepy fireflies. He imagined each car was carrying someone home to their own warm bed, maybe even someone who was just as cozy as he was.

He closed his eyes for a moment, listening. He could hear the very faint, far-off murmur of the city, like a giant, gentle sigh. It wasn't the loud honks and busy chatter of the day. It was a soft, steady hum, a lullaby made of whispers and distant breezes. It told him that everything was safe, everything was calm, and everything was right where it should be.

Arlo opened his eyes again and looked at the moon, a sliver of silver peeking from behind a cloud. It looked like a sleepy smile, watching over the city as it settled down for the night. The tall buildings, usually so busy and bright, now stood like silent, gentle giants, guarding the sleeping streets below. Their windows, once filled with light, were now mostly dark, like eyelids gently closing.

He thought of the little parks scattered through the city, where the trees would be rustling their leaves in a soft, sleepy dance. He thought of the rivers, flowing slowly and steadily, carrying their quiet secrets out to sea. Everything was slowing down, calming down, getting ready for rest.

Arlo yawned, a big, wide, happy yawn. His eyelids felt heavy, like they were made of fluffy clouds. The city's lullaby, that soft, steady hum, was getting softer and softer, pulling him deeper into his bed. He imagined his bed was a little cloud, floating gently above the sleepy city. He felt warm, safe, and loved.

With one last, happy sigh, Arlo closed his eyes. The city hummed its quiet goodnight, and Arlo, tucked in safe and sound, drifted off to sleep, ready for dreams as calm and peaceful as the quiet city around him.
