Theo and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Theo, Age 6

Created June 24, 2026

High above the quiet town, where the stars twinkled like tiny diamonds, lived a very special dragon named Theo. Theo wasn't like the big, fire-breathing dragons you hear about in adventure stories. Oh no, Theo was small, with scales the color of a gentle sunset, and instead of fire, he breathed out soft, shimmery dust that smelled faintly of lavender and dreams.

Theo had a very important job. Every night, after all the little children had brushed their teeth and snuggled into bed, he would fly up, up, up into the sky. His job was to help the Moon get ready for her own long, peaceful sleep.

Tonight, as Theo drifted through the velvet sky, he saw that the Moon was looking a little bit restless. She wasn't shining with her usual soft glow; instead, she seemed to be wiggling just a tiny bit, and her light flickered like a firefly trying to decide where to land.

“Good evening, dear Moon,” Theo whispered, his voice like the rustle of silk. “It looks like you're having a bit of trouble settling down tonight.”

The Moon sighed, a big, quiet sigh that made a few clouds drift lazily across the sky. “Oh, Theo,” she murmured, her voice a gentle hum. “I just can't seem to quiet my light tonight. There are so many stars sparkling, and it makes me want to sparkle right along with them!”

Theo smiled, a warm, reassuring smile. He knew just what to do. He flew a little closer to the Moon, his tail swishing softly behind him. Then, he took a deep, calming breath and began to breathe out his special, sleepy dust. The dust swirled around the Moon, a beautiful, sparkling cloud of lavender and dreams.

As the dust touched her, the Moon felt a wonderful warmth spread through her. Her bright light began to soften, like a lamp turning down low. The wiggles in her light smoothed out, and a peaceful calm settled over her.

Theo hummed a quiet, lullaby-like tune, a melody he’d learned from the whispering winds. He gently circled the Moon, making sure every part of her felt comfortable and sleepy. He told her about the quiet little rabbits tucked into their burrows, and the baby birds nestled in their nests, all sleeping soundly because the Moon was watching over them.

The Moon’s eyes, usually so wide and watchful, began to droop. Her glow became a soft, milky white, just right for dreaming. She let out another, much happier sigh, a sigh of pure contentment.

“Thank you, Theo,” she whispered, her voice already half-asleep. “You always know just how to help me drift off.”

Theo gave a happy flutter of his wings. His job was done. He watched as the Moon settled into her deep, peaceful sleep, casting her gentle light over the sleeping world below. Theo knew that soon, the sun would peek over the horizon, and it would be his turn to rest.

He slowly flew back down, his own eyelids feeling heavier and heavier. As he landed softly on his cloud-bed, the gentle scent of lavender and dreams still lingering around him, Theo yawned a big, sleepy yawn. He snuggled into the softest part of his cloud, closed his eyes, and drifted off to sleep, dreaming of quiet moons and twinkling stars.
