Jude's Starry Slumber

A story for: Jude, Age 7

Created August 16, 2026

Jude loved bedtime, especially when the moon peeked through his window like a friendly, glowing eye. Tonight, however, wasn't just any night. Tonight, Jude was going on a space adventure, right from his cozy bed.

He snuggled under his blanket, a soft, starry quilt that felt like a cloud. “Engines ready, Captain Jude!” he whispered to himself. With a gentle sigh, his bed began to hum, not a loud rumble, but a soft, sleepy vibration that tickled his toes. Up, up, up they floated, through the ceiling and past the rooftops, higher than the tallest trees.

The night sky opened up above him, a vast, velvety canvas painted with countless sparkling stars. They twinkled like tiny diamonds scattered by a giant, happy hand. Jude giggled softly. He reached out his hand, imagining he could catch one, but they were too far away, happy just to glitter and glow.

First, they visited the Moon, a big, round, pearly-white orb. It looked so peaceful, like a sleeping giant in the sky. Jude imagined little moon bunnies hopping softly across its dusty surface, leaving tiny footprints. He waved hello to the Man in the Moon, whose friendly face seemed to smile back at him.

Next, they drifted past Mars, the Red Planet. It glowed a warm, rusty orange, like a beautiful campfire in the distance. Jude pretended he could smell marshmallows roasting, a sweet, comforting scent. He imagined little Martian animals, perhaps fluffy, red squirrels, gathering glowing berries under the gentle Martian sun.

Then, Jude’s bed-spaceship glided towards Jupiter, a magnificent, swirling planet with bands of soft blues, yellows, and browns. It looked like a giant marble, painted by a master artist. Jude imagined the clouds on Jupiter were made of fluffy cotton candy, stretching endlessly across its immense surface. He closed his eyes for a moment, just to imagine the sweet taste.

As they ventured deeper into the cosmic ocean, Jude saw a constellation shaped like a sleepy bear, and another like a graceful swan. He felt so small and yet so safe, cradled in the vastness of space. The stars hummed a lullaby, a silent song of wonder and peace. Each twinkle was like a tiny bell, ringing softly in the quiet night.

Soon, Jude's spaceship began its gentle descent. The stars grew fainter, the moon a silver sliver, and the familiar shape of his window appeared once more. He landed softly back in his bed, the starry quilt still feeling like a cloud. The sleepy vibration of his bed faded, replaced by the soft whisper of his own breathing.

Jude yawned, a big, happy yawn. The stars outside his window still glittered, but now they seemed to be winking, sharing a secret dream with him. He snuggled deeper under his quilt, remembering the moon bunnies, the Martian squirrels, and the cotton candy clouds of Jupiter. With a contented sigh, Jude closed his eyes, the gentle magic of his space adventure carrying him into a deep, peaceful slumber.
