A story for: Luna, Age 5
Created October 13, 2026
The sun dipped low, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and pink, like a giant, sleepy watercolor. Little Luna, with her big, curious eyes, stood by her window, watching her city transform. The busy sounds of the day began to hush, replaced by a gentler hum.
First, the bright, yellow taxis looked like tiny, blinking fireflies as they drove slower and slower. Then, the tall buildings that reached for the sky started to glow, one window at a time, like friendly eyes winking goodnight. Luna imagined each light was a little star, twinkling just for her city.
She saw the big, green park below, where earlier she had played. Now, the trees swayed ever so softly, making a sound like a quiet whisper. "Shhh," they seemed to say, "it's time for dreams."
Luna snuggled into her favorite blanket, which was as soft as a cloud. Her mommy had made her a warm cup of milk, and the sweet smell floated gently in the air. She took a tiny sip, feeling cozy from her head to her toes.
Tonight, the city outside her window seemed to be singing a lullaby. The distant rumble of a train was like a deep, comforting hum. The far-off sound of a boat horn on the river was a long, sleepy yawn. Even the streetlights, usually so bright, now cast a soft, golden glow, making the world outside feel safe and peaceful.
Luna imagined all the little creatures in the city were getting ready for bed too. Maybe the pigeons on the rooftops were tucking their heads under their wings. Perhaps the tiny mice in the old bookstore were curled up, dreaming of cheese. And the friendly dogs, after their last walks, were snuggled in their beds, letting out soft snores.
She thought about her own bed, so warm and soft. Her pillow felt like a fluffy cloud, ready to catch her dreams. She closed her eyes, and the sounds of the city seemed to get even softer, blending together into one big, comforting hum. It was the sound of a city sleeping, and it was a beautiful sound.
Luna took a deep, gentle breath. The city was quiet now, holding its breath with her. She felt herself drift, like a little boat on a calm, dark river. The last thing she heard was the soft, distant whisper of the wind through the tall buildings, telling her sweet dreams. And with a contented sigh, Luna fell fast asleep.
