Remy and the Dream Lantern

A story for: Remy, Age 7

Created July 18, 2026

Deep in a cozy burrow, snuggled amongst soft moss and dandelion fluff, lived a little bunny named Remy. Remy wasn't just any bunny; Remy was a brave bunny, with twitchy whiskers and eyes like polished pebbles.

Every night, as the sun dipped below the whispering willow trees, Remy would feel a gentle flutter in his heart. It wasn't a scared flutter, but an excited one. For Remy had a very important job, a job only he could do.

Beside his tiny bed, carved from a smooth, hollowed-out acorn, sat his most precious possession: the Dream Lantern. It wasn't a big lantern, just small enough for Remy to hold carefully in his paws. Its light was a soft, warm amber, like a firefly’s glow, and it hummed with a quiet, sleepy tune.

“Time for dreams,” Remy would whisper, his nose wiggling with anticipation. He’d gently pick up the Dream Lantern, its warmth seeping into his fur, and venture out of his burrow. The forest, usually full of chirps and rustles, was hushed at night, painted in silver by the moon.

Remy’s job was to make sure every sleepy creature in the forest received a good dream. He’d tiptoe past the sleeping squirrels, holding the lantern high. A tiny sparkle would drift from the lantern’s glow and settle over the squirrel’s nest, promising dreams of endless acorns and sunny days.

He’d hop softly past the napping field mice, who would twitch their noses in their sleep as the lantern’s light brought them dreams of sweet berries and warm tunnels. He even peeked into the owl’s hollow, ensuring dreams of silent flights and starlit skies.

One night, as Remy was making his rounds, he noticed a tiny, lost sparkle hovering near a patch of sleepy bluebells. It was a dream sparkle that had wandered off! Remy, brave as ever, carefully coaxed it back with the gentle light of his lantern, guiding it safely to a baby ladybug who was tucked under a leaf. The ladybug immediately smiled in her sleep, dreaming of dewdrops and blooming roses.

Remy felt a warm glow spread through him, not just from the lantern, but from his heart. He loved helping his friends have sweet dreams. Finally, his important work was done. The moon was high, a silver button in the dark velvet sky.

He returned to his burrow, the Dream Lantern still humming its lullaby. He carefully placed it beside his bed, its soft glow casting dancing shadows on the mossy walls. Remy snuggled into his dandelion fluff, feeling safe and warm. The last thing he saw before his eyelids grew heavy was the gentle, golden light of his Dream Lantern, guarding his own sleep. And as Remy drifted off, he dreamt of bright stars, endless fields of clover, and the quiet satisfaction of a job well done. Goodnight, brave Remy.
