Theo's City Lullaby

A story for: Theo, Age 7

Created August 10, 2026

Theo snuggled deeper into his soft, warm bed. Outside his window, the city lights twinkled like a giant, scattered blanket of stars. He loved looking at them before he went to sleep.

Tonight, Theo imagined each light was a tiny, sleeping creature, tucked into its own cozy spot. The red brake lights on the distant cars looked like sleepy ladybugs, slowly blinking as they drifted off to dreamland. The streetlights, tall and steady, were like friendly giants, holding glowing lanterns to guide the way for the moonbeams.

He watched a police car drive by, its blue and red lights gently flashing, not in a hurry, but like a silent, happy dance. Theo thought of the police officer inside, probably heading home to a warm bed too, after a long day of helping everyone.

The tall buildings, usually so busy and bustling, now stood quietly, their windows dark except for a few squares of yellow light. Theo pictured the people inside, nestled in their beds, just like him. He wondered if they were dreaming of fluffy clouds or adventurous playgrounds.

A gentle hum came from the city, a soft, sleepy sound. It wasn't the loud noises of the day, but a quiet, rhythmic murmur, like the city was breathing softly in its sleep. Theo closed his eyes for a moment and listened. He heard the distant, muffled whisper of a train, like a long, sleepy caterpillar crawling slowly across the land.

He opened his eyes again and saw the moon, a crescent smile in the dark sky, casting a silvery glow over everything. It seemed to be saying, "Shhh, little one, it's time for dreams." The stars around it shimmered, like tiny diamond dust sprinkled across a velvet cloth.

Theo took a deep, slow breath, feeling his own body relax. He imagined his bed was a soft cloud, floating gently above the city. He could almost feel the cool night air on his cheeks and smell the faint, clean scent of the evening. The city was a big, kind friend, watching over him as he slept.

His eyelids felt heavy, like two little curtains slowly closing. He thought of his favorite teddy bear, Mr. Snuggles, tucked beside him, already deep in dreams. Theo let out a soft sigh, a tiny puff of air, as he drifted further and further into his own peaceful sleep. The city hummed its lullaby, and Theo smiled, knowing he was safe and sound, ready for wonderful dreams.
