A story for: Nora, Age 6
Created October 13, 2026
Once upon a time, nestled in a cozy little house with a sky-blue roof, lived a bright-eyed girl named Nora. Nora loved to play, to draw, and most of all, to imagine. Every evening, as the sun dipped low and painted the clouds in hues of orange and soft pink, Nora would get ready for bed. But tonight, there was a tiny flutter in her tummy, a feeling like a butterfly doing a soft little dance.
Tonight, Nora was going to sleep in her very own big-girl bed, all by herself for the first time. It was a beautiful bed, with soft sheets and a fluffy pillow that smelled like sunshine and lavender. But still, the butterfly fluttered. “What if it’s too quiet?” she wondered. “What if the shadows look like funny shapes?”
Her mommy came in, her smile as warm as a fresh-baked cookie. “Ready for your grand adventure, my brave girl?” she asked, tucking Nora in snuggly. Nora snuggled deeper into her pillow. “It’s a bit quiet, Mommy,” she whispered.
Mommy kissed her forehead. “Then listen very closely, my love. Listen for the Whispering Wind. It knows all sorts of gentle secrets.”
After Mommy left, leaving a soft nightlight glowing like a friendly star, Nora closed her eyes. She listened. At first, she only heard the gentle thumping of her own little heart. But then, a soft, soft sound began to drift through her window. It was the wind, just as Mommy had said.
“Shhh-shhh-shhh,” it whispered, like soft silk brushing against the leaves outside. Nora imagined the wind gently rocking the branches of the old oak tree, singing a lullaby to the little birds in their nests. She imagined it dancing through fields of tall grass, making them sway like sleepy dancers.
The Whispering Wind wasn’t scary at all. It sounded like a friend, telling her that everything was safe and sound. It told her that even when she couldn’t see, she could trust her ears. It told her that being brave wasn't about not being scared, but about trying new things even with a little flutter in her tummy.
Nora felt a warm, fuzzy feeling spread from her toes to her nose. The shadows on the wall didn't look like funny shapes anymore. They looked like sleeping animals, curled up and dreaming. The quiet wasn't empty; it was filled with the soft song of the wind and the peaceful quiet of her own room.
She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly, just like the wind. The butterfly in her tummy had settled down, feeling cozy and content. She was a brave girl, listening to the Whispering Wind, tucked in her own big bed. As the wind continued its gentle shush-shush-shush, Nora’s eyelids grew heavy, and she drifted off to a sleep as soft and peaceful as the wind’s whisper, dreaming of dancing leaves and starlit skies.
