Kai and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Kai, Age 4

Created September 24, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the puffy white clouds, lived a very special little dragon named Kai. Kai wasn't like other dragons you might read about. He didn't breathe fiery flames, and he certainly didn't hoard treasure. Kai had the softest, most shimmery scales, like a rainbow after a gentle rain, and his breath was a warm, soft puff of air, smelling faintly of lavender and starlight.

Every night, Kai would fly up, up, up into the sky. He loved to visit his very best friend, the Moon. The Moon, you see, was a little bit shy and sometimes had trouble falling asleep. When the Moon couldn't sleep, the stars would look a little dim, and the night sky wouldn't feel quite as cozy.

Tonight, Kai found the Moon looking very round and very, very wide awake. "Oh, Kai," sighed the Moon, its voice a gentle hum, "I just can't close my eyes. I've counted all the sheep in the sky, and they've all floated away to dreamland!"

Kai giggled, a sound like tiny bells tinkling. "Don't you worry, my friend," he said, fluttering his wings softly. "I know just what to do."

First, Kai very gently nudged a few fluffy clouds into place, making a soft, billowy pillow for the Moon's head. The Moon smiled, feeling a little more comfortable already.

Then, Kai began to sing. His song was a quiet, humming melody, like a lullaby whispered by the wind through the leaves. He sang about sleepy flowers closing their petals, about little birds tucked safely in their nests, and about the calm, quiet peace that comes with the night.

As Kai sang, he began to do something else. He gently blew his warm, lavender-scented breath, not too strong, just a soft whisper, all around the Moon. The Moon felt a wave of peaceful warmth wash over it, like being wrapped in a soft, cozy blanket.

Slowly, ever so slowly, the Moon's bright, watchful eyes began to droop. The corners of its crescent lips turned up in a contented smile. The stars around them started to twinkle brighter, happy that their friend was finally finding rest.

Kai continued to sing his soft, sleepy song until the Moon's eyes were completely closed, and its round face was peaceful and still. He watched for a moment, making sure the Moon was truly dreaming happy dreams.

Then, with a quiet yawn of his own, Kai began his gentle journey back home. He flew past the sleeping clouds, under the now-bright stars, and down towards his own cozy cloud bed. As he snuggled into his softest cloud, Kai closed his own shimmery eyes, feeling so happy that his friend, the Moon, was finally fast asleep. And with a contented sigh, Kai drifted off to sleep too, dreaming of lavender, starlight, and the quiet beauty of a peaceful night.
