A story for: Wren, Age 5
Created October 21, 2026
The city lights twinkled like a million tiny stars, even brighter than the ones Wren could sometimes spot in the very dark sky. Wren, with her softest pajamas on, snuggled into her bed, her favorite fluffy cloud pillow tucked just right.
Outside her window, the big city was getting ready for sleep too. The rumble of the daytime buses was now just a soft purr, like a giant sleepy cat. The busy honks of cars had turned into gentle whispers, as if the cars were tiptoeing home.
Wren watched a line of streetlights blink on, one by one, like a necklace of glowing pearls draped across the buildings. She imagined each light was saying goodnight to the next. Goodnight, bright yellow lamp. Goodnight, warm orange glow.
Up high, the tall buildings seemed to stretch their arms to the moon, ready for a long night's rest. Wren pretended her own building was giving a big, quiet yawn. She yawned too, a tiny little one, just like a kitten.
She heard the distant, gentle wooooo-woooo of a faraway train. It sounded like a sleepy song, singing the city to sleep. Wren closed her eyes and pictured the train chugging slowly over the tracks, carrying dreams to sleepy children all over town.
A soft breeze drifted through her open window, rustling the leaves on the small tree outside. It sounded like the tree was sighing contentedly, happy to have a quiet moment. Wren imagined the leaves were tiny green hands, waving goodnight to the day.
Her cozy blanket felt like a warm hug, wrapping her up tight. She thought about all the sleepy things in the city. The little pigeons nestled on their ledges, their heads tucked under their wings. The quiet shop windows, reflecting the soft glow of the streetlights. Even the big, busy park was now still, with its swings hanging still and its slides waiting patiently for morning.
Wren took a deep breath, smelling the clean night air that floated in. She felt so safe and snug in her bed, surrounded by the peaceful, sleeping city. The gentle hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen became a soft lullaby, and the tick-tock of the clock on her wall was a quiet heartbeat, steady and calm.
She squeezed her eyes shut one last time, imagining herself floating on a soft cloud, drifting slowly above the sleeping city. The lights below looked like tiny, winking eyes, watching over her as she drifted further and further into her dreams. Wren snuggled deeper into her pillow, a tiny smile on her face, and finally, gently, fell fast asleep.
