Ruby and the Sleepy Ocean Song

A story for: Ruby, Age 6

Created September 09, 2026

Far, far out in the big, deep blue ocean, where the water shimmered like a thousand tiny diamonds, lived a very special whale named Ruby. Ruby wasn't the biggest whale, nor the fastest, but she had the most beautiful voice in the entire sea. It was a voice made for lullabies, soft and warm like a cozy blanket.

Every evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Ruby knew it was time for her important job. She would float gently to the surface, her enormous body a peaceful shadow against the fading light. Then, she would begin to sing.

Her song wasn't like any other. It was a melody that whispered through the water, calming every creature it touched. The busy little clownfish, who had been darting in and out of their anemone home all day, would slow down and yawn. The grumpy old crab, who usually scuttled sideways with a frown, would pause and let his claws relax.

Ruby’s song reminded the ocean of happy things: the gentle sway of seaweed, the soft patter of raindrops on the surface, the quiet sparkle of moonlight on the waves. She sang of stars beginning to peek through the darkness, like tiny fairy lights in the sky, and of the peaceful drift of sleepy jellyfish.

Even the big, booming waves, which loved to crash and splash during the day, would soften their rumble to a gentle sigh. They’d roll slowly towards the shore, tucking in the sandy beaches for the night. The sea birds, who had been calling to each other all day, would settle onto their nests, their feathers fluffed and their eyes growing heavy.

Ruby sang of rest and quiet, of sweet dreams filled with bubbly discoveries and sunlit swims. Her voice was like a hug for the whole ocean, a warm embrace that told everyone it was safe to close their eyes and drift off to sleep. She poured all her love and gentleness into each note, making sure every corner of the vast, watery world felt loved and secure.

As the very last sliver of sunlight disappeared and the first sleepy stars twinkled brightly, Ruby would hum the final, softest notes of her lullaby. She would feel a wave of peaceful sleepiness wash over her too. The ocean was quiet now, save for the soft gurgle of the water and the distant whisper of the tide. Everything was tucked in, safe and sound.

Ruby would then dive slowly, gracefully, into the deep, dark calm of the ocean. She'd find her favorite soft patch of sandy seabed, curl her magnificent body, and let the gentle current rock her to sleep. The last thing she would feel was the peaceful quiet of the ocean, a quiet she had helped create, as she drifted into her own wonderful dreams.
