Leo and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Leo, Age 3

Created September 16, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the puffy white clouds, lived a kind little dragon named Leo. Leo wasn't like other dragons who breathed fire. Oh no! Leo breathed soft, shimmery moonbeams, and he loved to make everything around him feel cozy and warm.

Every night, when the sun dipped below the hills, Leo would wake up. His job was very important! He helped the big, round moon get ready for bed. Tonight, the moon looked extra sleepy. It was yawning big, wide yawns that made little stars twinkle even brighter.

“Good evening, sleepy Moon!” whispered Leo, his voice like a gentle breeze. “Are you ready for your night-night cozy-time?”

The Moon gave a soft hum. “Oh, Leo,” it sighed, “I’m so tired from shining all day and all night. I just want to snuggle down.”

Leo knew just what to do. He gently unfurled his big, shimmering wings. They weren’t scaly, but felt like soft, warm velvet. With a soft flap, Leo began to fly in slow, gentle circles around the Moon. As he flew, he breathed out his special moonbeam-breath. These weren't hot, like dragon fire, but soft, glowing trails of light that wrapped around the Moon like a warm, sparkly blanket.

The Moon closed one eye, then the other, feeling the comforting warmth. “That feels so nice, Leo,” it murmured, its voice getting softer and softer.

Next, Leo sang a lullaby. It wasn't a loud, booming song, but a quiet, humming tune that sounded like wind chimes in a gentle breeze. He sang about fluffy clouds and sleepy stars, about quiet nights and sweet dreams. He sang about how loved the Moon was, and how important its sleep was.

As Leo sang, he gently nuzzled the Moon, his soft nose touching its big, round cheek. The Moon snuggled deeper into its moonbeam blanket. Its shining light grew dimmer and dimmer, a sign that it was getting very, very sleepy. Little by little, the Moon’s light became a soft, sleepy glow.

Finally, the Moon was completely asleep, dreaming sweet dreams in the big, dark sky. Leo smiled, a happy, sleepy smile. His job was done. He watched over the sleeping Moon for a little while longer, making sure it was safe and warm.

Now, Leo felt very sleepy too. All that gentle flying and soft singing had made his own eyes feel heavy. He found a soft, fluffy cloud, just the right size for a little dragon. He curled up, tucking his tail close. He breathed out one last, soft moonbeam, which twinkled above him like a tiny nightlight.

Leo closed his eyes. He listened to the quiet hum of the sleeping world below. He felt the gentle sway of the cloud. He was warm, he was safe, and he was very, very sleepy. With a happy sigh, Leo drifted off to sleep, dreaming of soft moonbeams and sweet dreams, just like the Moon he loved so much.
