Mia and the Sleepy Moon

A story for: Mia, Age 7

Created August 23, 2026

Once upon a time, high above the quiet little town where Mia lived, there was a very special dragon. This wasn't a scary, fire-breathing dragon, oh no. This was a gentle, sky-blue dragon named Lumina, whose scales shimmered like moonlight and whose breath smelled faintly of warm milk and lavender.

Every night, just as the stars began to twinkle, Lumina had a very important job. She helped the Moon fall asleep. You see, even the Moon, with all its bright light, sometimes felt a little restless and found it hard to drift off.

Mia, snuggled warm in her bed, loved to watch Lumina. She would peek out her window and see the sky-blue dragon gently circling the big, round Moon. Tonight, the Moon looked extra bright, almost too bright to close its eyes.

Lumina began her bedtime routine. First, she would sing a soft, hummy song, a melody made of starlight and gentle breezes. The song would float down to Mia's window, making her feel cozy and safe. Then, Lumina would gather the softest, fluffiest clouds she could find. She'd arrange them like a giant, comfortable pillow all around the Moon, making sure it was just right.

Next, Lumina would breathe out her special lavender-scented air. It wasn't hot, like fire. It was cool and calming, like a whispered lullaby. As the lavender breath drifted around the Moon, its bright glow would soften, just a little. Mia watched as the Moon's edges seemed to blur, becoming less crisp and more dream-like.

Tonight, Lumina noticed the Moon was still wiggling a bit, perhaps thinking about all the things it had seen during the day. So, Lumina did something extra special. She gently tucked a shimmering star blanket around the Moon, pulling it up just under its 'chin.' The star blanket sparkled softly, not too bright, but just enough to feel magical and secure.

Mia, watching from her window, felt her own eyelids growing heavy. The Moon, now cradled in clouds, draped in starlight, and breathing in Lumina's lavender air, began to close its sleepy eyes. Its light dimmed further, becoming a soft, pearly glow that filled Mia's room with peaceful magic.

Lumina gave a contented sigh, her job done for the night. She floated quietly off into the deeper parts of the sky, leaving the Moon to dream sweet dreams. Mia snuggled deeper into her own covers. The lavender scent from Lumina's breath seemed to have reached her room, making her feel perfectly calm. She closed her eyes, imagining the Moon sleeping soundly, and drifted off into her own wonderful dreams, feeling safe and loved.
