Arlo's City Night

A story for: Arlo, Age 3

Created September 07, 2026

Once upon a time, in a big, busy city, lived a little boy named Arlo. Arlo loved his city. He loved the tall buildings that touched the sky and the friendly red buses that hummed down the streets. But most of all, Arlo loved the city when it was time to say goodnight.

Tonight, Arlo was tucked snugly in his bed. His favorite teddy bear, Barnaby, was right beside him. Arlo looked out his window. The sun was just starting to wave goodbye, painting the sky in sleepy shades of orange and pink. "Look, Barnaby," Arlo whispered, "the sky is putting on its pajamas too."

Soon, the first little stars twinkled like tiny diamonds, and the streetlights below began to glow, one by one, like sleepy fireflies. A soft, gentle hum filled the air – the sound of the city getting ready for bed. It wasn't a loud hum, just a quiet, sleepy song.

Arlo imagined the big, tall buildings dimming their lights, one floor at a time, as people snuggled into their own beds. He pictured the red buses parking quietly for the night, dreaming of all the happy trips they would take tomorrow. Even the busy little taxis were probably tucking themselves in, their bright yellow colors fading to a soft, sleepy gold.

He watched a big, round moon peek over the tallest building, like a friendly night-light. The moon cast a soft, silver glow over everything, making the city look like a magical, shimmering blanket. Arlo yawned a big, sleepy yawn.

"Goodnight, city," Arlo whispered, his voice soft and warm. "Goodnight, tall buildings. Goodnight, friendly buses. Goodnight, little stars. Goodnight, big moon."

Barnaby snuggled closer. Arlo closed his eyes, listening to the gentle hum of the city as it drifted off to sleep. The sounds were soft and comforting, like a lullaby just for him. He felt so safe and warm in his bed, surrounded by the sleeping city. A little smile played on his lips as he drifted into a peaceful, gentle sleep, dreaming of quiet streets and friendly moonbeams.
