Ruby and the Sleepy Ocean

A story for: Ruby, Age 7

Created August 15, 2026

Deep, deep in the shimmering blue ocean, lived a kind and gentle whale named Ruby. Ruby wasn't like other whales who might play loud games or splash with great big tails. Ruby loved quiet, and most of all, Ruby loved to sing.

Every evening, as the sun dipped its fiery toes into the water and painted the sky in shades of pink and purple, Ruby knew it was time for her special job. Her job was to sing the ocean to sleep. She would find a calm, peaceful spot where the water was still and the kelp swayed ever so gently like sleepy dancers.

Ruby would take a deep, slow breath, feeling the cool water fill her mighty lungs. Then, a soft, low hum would begin. It was a sound like no other, a sound that rippled through the water, carrying a feeling of peace to every creature, big and small. The tiny, glowing jellyfish would blink their lights a little slower. The schools of silver fish would slow their darting movements, bunching closer together, their fins barely stirring the water.

Her song wasn't made of words, but of notes that curved and flowed like the ocean currents themselves. It was a lullaby woven from the quiet whisper of the tides, the soft swish of seaweed, and the gentle sigh of the waves against the shore. It was a song that told the starfish to snuggle into the sand, the playful dolphins to dream of leaping high, and the wise old sea turtles to close their ancient eyes.

As Ruby sang, a feeling of calm spread through the entire ocean. The bustling daytime sounds faded away. The water itself seemed to grow heavier, softer, like a giant, cozy blanket settling over everything. Ruby would close her own large, kind eyes, feeling the vibrations of her song throughout her body. It made her feel warm and happy to know she was helping all her ocean friends rest.

Tonight, as Ruby sang her sweet lullaby, a little puffin, who had spent the day diving for fish, found himself growing very sleepy. He tucked his head under his wing, listening to the soothing melody. A young crab, usually scuttling and busy, paused and burrowed deeper into his sandy bed. Even the big, friendly sharks felt a peaceful drowsiness settle over them, their powerful tails swaying slower and slower.

Ruby's song grew softer and softer, like a whispered secret, until it was just a gentle, lingering hum in the deep. The moon, a silver coin in the dark sky, cast its sleepy glow over the now-peaceful ocean. All was quiet. All was calm. Ruby, too, felt a lovely sleepiness wash over her. With one last, soft hum, she drifted into her own peaceful dreams, knowing the entire ocean was sleeping soundly, thanks to her gentle song.
