A story for: Wren, Age 4
Created September 10, 2026
Once upon a time, in a cozy little apartment high up in a big, friendly city, lived a sweet little girl named Wren. Wren loved her city. She loved the tall buildings that touched the sky, and the little cars that looked like tiny beetles scurrying along the streets below.
Tonight, Wren was tucked into her soft bed, her favorite fluffy blanket pulled up to her chin. Outside her window, the city was starting to get sleepy too. The bright, busy lights that sparkled like a million fireflies were slowly dimming, one by one.
"Goodnight, big, tall building," Wren whispered, looking at the skyscraper across the street, its top floor lights now just a soft glow. "Sleep tight."
She watched as the traffic lights on the street below changed from red, to yellow, to green, then back again, but slower now, much slower. The cars, which had zoomed and whizzed all day, were now just gently rumbling, like a tired kitty purring softly.
"Goodnight, little cars," Wren murmured, her eyelids feeling heavier and heavier. "Rest well."
The city sounds, which had been a cheerful symphony of honks and chatter during the day, were now soft whispers. Wren could hear the gentle hum of the building's elevator, like a sleepy giant taking a quiet breath. She heard the distant, soothing whoosh of a train, like a long, drawn-out sigh.
Her mommy came in to give her a goodnight kiss. "Are you sleepy, my little Wren?" she asked, her voice as soft as a cloud.
"Mmm-hmm," Wren hummed, already snuggling deeper into her pillow. "The city is sleeping too, Mommy."
Mommy smiled and stroked Wren's hair. "That's right, sweetheart. The city is dreaming its own sweet dreams, just like you will."
Wren closed her eyes, imagining the tall buildings dreaming of stars, and the little cars dreaming of long, open roads. She imagined the park dreaming of children's laughter, and the streetlights dreaming of sunrises.
She took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. The air in her room felt warm and safe. The gentle glow from the city outside her window became a soft nightlight, promising her that everything was peaceful and calm.
As the last few distant city sounds faded into a quiet lullaby, Wren drifted off to sleep, her own sweet dreams beginning to bloom like flowers in the quiet city night.
