A story for: Mia, Age 5
Created September 27, 2026
Once upon a time, high above the sleepy town, lived a very special, very gentle dragon named Mia. Mia wasn't like the dragons in exciting adventure stories. She had scales the color of the softest amethyst and wings that shimmered like a rainbow when she flew. And her favorite thing to do was to make sure everyone, especially the bright, busy moon, had a good night's sleep.
Every evening, as the sun dipped below the hills, Mia would stretch her long, graceful neck and yawn a tiny puff of warm, lavender-scented smoke. She'd watch the stars begin to twinkle, one by one, like little diamonds scattered across a velvet cloth. But her eyes were mostly on the moon, a big, round, golden cookie in the sky.
Tonight, Mia noticed the moon looked a little too bright, a little too wide awake. It was glowing so brightly, it seemed to be bouncing with energy, winking at every star it passed. Mia knew just what to do. She unfurled her magnificent wings, not with a whoosh or a roar, but with a gentle rustle, like soft silk. She soared upwards, higher and higher, until she was floating right beside the moon.
“Good evening, dear Moon,” Mia whispered, her voice like the soft chime of tiny bells. “You seem quite lively tonight. Are you having trouble settling down for your peaceful slumber?”
The moon, in its own silent way, seemed to nod. It glowed a little brighter, as if to say, “Yes, I have so much to watch over! How can I sleep?”
Mia smiled. “I understand,” she said. “Sometimes, a little lullaby is just what you need to drift off. Shall I sing you one?”
The moon shimmered with excitement. Mia took a deep breath, and from her throat, a melody poured out. It wasn't a loud song, or a fast one. It was a slow, humming tune, like the wind sighing through tall trees, or the gentle lap of waves on a sandy shore. She sang of soft clouds drifting by, of sleepy butterflies closing their wings, of little bunnies snuggled safely in their burrows.
As Mia sang, she gently fanned her wings. It wasn't to create a breeze, but to cast soft, shimmering shadows over the moon, like a cozy blanket. The lavender scent from her breath mingled with the starlight, making the air feel peaceful and calm.
Slowly, ever so slowly, the moon began to dim. Its bright, bouncy glow softened into a gentle, sleepy radiance. The winking stopped, and it seemed to settle deeper into the dark sky, like a child snuggling into a warm bed. Mia sang one last, whispered verse, and then, the moon was truly asleep, casting its soft, silver light over the world without a single worry.
Mia, feeling happy and peaceful, slowly descended back to her cloud. She curled up, her amethyst scales gleaming softly in the quiet night. She thought about the moon, sleeping soundly, and smiled. Her own eyelids began to feel heavy. With a soft sigh, Mia closed her eyes, and drifted into a sweet, peaceful sleep, dreaming of stars and soft lullabies.
